Ras Al Khaimah - The National Election Committee (NEC) organized an educational seminar in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) yesterday (Thursday) for members of the Electoral College (EC) at the Cultural Center, RAK.

The educational seminar, hosted jointly by Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and NEC, comes as part of the road shows on elections dedicated to boost up interaction between Electoral College (EC) members and the larger UAE society, and increase awareness of the country's first elections to the Federal National Council (FNC) that will take place on December 16, 18 and 20 of 2006.

The seminar was attended by H.E Tariq Hilal Lootah, Secretary-General of FNC Affairs Ministry, member of the NEC, and Head if the Election Management Committee, Dr. Saeed Al Ghafli, Assistant Secretary-General of the FNC Affairs Ministry and Emirates sub-committee coordinator and a huge crowd from the EC members in RAK.

Dr. Al Ghafli gave an overview of the election process and its different stages in the first phase. Mr. Lootah and Dr. Saeed also answered inquiries from the EC members and took note of a number of suggestions regarding the election process.

Mr. Lootah said: "The upcoming FNC elections are a natural progression following the UAE's success in social, economic and cultural field. This election is the first phase of the 3-step process, outlined by the UAE President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will gradually usher in people's participation to activate and empower the FNC as an effective body reflecting the needs and aspirations of the citizens," said Mr. Lootah.

Mr. Lootah added that the seminars are part of a gradual process to create an electoral culture in the UAE, "the objective of the upcoming seminars is to train and introduce the EC members to the election process, and by partnering with the HCT we are able to directly reach our youth and ensure that our campaign covers the country."

The HCT is the largest educational institute in the UAE, and one of its most progressive and innovative institutions. With 13 campuses throughout the country, the HCT has expanded rapidly while maintaining its commitment to excellence in teaching and learning standards.

The National Election Committee is assigned to supervise the upcoming elections which will take place will take place on December 16, 18 and 20, 2006.
