Manama - Kingdom of Bahrain, 21 February 2006 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham) invited Mr. Charles Bolz from Navy Public Works Department in Bahrain to give a presentation on "how to become a Navy Base contractor for construction, services and long term leases". The presentation was recently held in the Grand Mercure Hotel, Seef district.
"Currently the Naval Support Activity (NSA) has 80 active projects that were awarded to a local construction company in Bahrain. The value of these projects is $7.2 million and the delivery orders in fiscal year 2005 reached $5 million", commented Charles Bolz from Navy Public Works Department in Bahrain.
The Navy in Bahrain only procures construction projects which are less than $750,000 in value. Above this value, construction projects fall under the job of the US Army Corp of Engineers District in this part of the world details of which can be found on the following website: www.tac.usace.army.mil/extranet/contracting
The Navy Public Works Department's construction in Bahrain dropped from $14 million to $7 million in 2001, but reached its maximum value of $20 million in 2003 then dropped again in 2004 to $15 million and $7.5 million in 2005. Expectations are that the increase in construction value will reach $8 million in the year 2006.
"With such expected increase in construction value for this year, the opportunities for construction companies and other services providers is huge especially since the department has a relatively high budget to spend on projects due to the high demand and needs of the Navy Central Command (NAVCENT)", Mr. Bolz concluded.
The total budget for the Public Works Department for the fiscal year of 2005 was $18 million. More than half of this budget will be spent on services for the existing facilities in this year which is expected to continue increasing. This budget is usually divided into utilities, facility management, facility services, transportation and facility investment.
More than 40 representatives of hotels and traders from companies that included automobile, food, construction material, generators, tractors and computers as well as members of AmCham attended the presentation.
All the contractors for the Navy have to be registered at DUNS&BRADSTREET website www.dbuk.dnb.com and have CAGE CODE. The main website to figure out the needs of US government is: www.ccr.gov.
This is not the first time AmCham organizes a presentation on a similar subject. Earlier in September, Cheryl Manley-Lott, the fleet support supervisor at the Naval Supply System Command conducted a presentation on the rules on doing business with the US Naval Base including the Command's tendering and payment process.
