Abu Dhabi, 26th April 2010: Thuraya is seeing a strong market response to its satellite handheld phone "Thuraya XT" which continues to generate interest across vertical and business markets. The Company has sold around 8,000 units since beginning of 2010 and expects to sell a total of 20,000 units by the end of the year.

"A number of key distributors and customers showed great demand on the product, which is fueling its reputation and market rollout.  The innovative device sets new benchmarks in the mobile satellite services (MSS) industry for robustness and quality.

By end of first Quarter 2010, we sold approximately 4,000 XT phones, and there are confirmed orders during this month for 4,000 units.  According to our Sales team, we expect the market take-up for the XT phone to exceed 20,000 units by end of the year," said Thuraya's Senior Manager Marketing and Sales, Mr. Muiz Saad.

Thuraya XT sales have been spread over several markets including Libya, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iran and Saudi Arabia in vertical sectors such as oil and gas, military, government, NGOs, broadcast media, large corporates and maritime who are Thuraya's main customer base.

The phone is unique in its capabilities and features especially that it is a rare combination of robustness and size. Weighing only 193 grams, the phone is very handy to use and designed to withstand the harshest of environments.

"Thuraya XT is the only satellite to be both IP54/IK03 certified making it dust, splash water and shock proof. It went through a very rigorous testing process to achieve standards of durability unavailable in the MSS market," added Saad.

In terms of performance, Thuraya XT has several features such as data services with download speeds of 60 kbps allowing users to connect to the internet when connected to a lab top. In addition, the phone has GPS navigation and is the most sleek, robust satellite phone currently on the market.

Thuraya XT provides high quality service because it is backed by Thuraya's robust network that covers 140 countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Australia.
