MobileCom launches a new era in mobile data services; providing Kingdom-wide coverage for high-speed access over its GPRS network

Zubi, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, MobileCom celebrated the commercial launch of GPRS at the Dunes Club Amman on Sunday 26 May 2002. The launch of GPRS highlights MobileComs commitment to the development of cutting edge services that deliver on todays mobile communications needs.

The MobileCom network is a 2.5 generation network and is ready to serve the Kingdom for all its communications needs, said Dr.Henry Azzam chairman of MobileCom. By the launch of this service we are building on our commitment to His Majesty King Abdullah to deliver new levels of technological capability to the people of this great Kingdom, and to ensuring that this industry continues to grow, bringing more benefit to Jordanians today and in the future.

MobileCom is launching GPRS to provide its customers with the latest value added services that offer true information mobility in Jordan, bringing convergent voice/data capabilities to mobile phones, accessible from anywhere in the kingdom, said Jean-Christophe Caillat, CEO of MobileCom. Our customers will now be able to enjoy high speed data connectivity with 3-4 times the current GSM data speed to make the transfer of information simple, quick and affordable, while opening new channels of communication for business and pleasure.

Customers using GPRS service will be charged by the volume of data which is sent and received, rather than a per minute charge as with voice calls, enabling customers to exchange information and pay for the amount they send and receive only. Customers will be charged 6 fils per 10 kilobytes (KB) of data exchanged for GPRS Internet access and 1 fils per 1kb for GPRS WAP access. Prepaid users will be charged 1 fils per 1kb for GPRS WAP access only. MobileCom will offer the service with no connection fee or monthly fee for the four months promotional period.

MobileCom is further empowering its customers with by providing an auto run CD that allows customers to configure GPRS over their laptop, PCs and PDAs ensuring a quick and simple setup for connecting, said Erick Valette, chief marketing officer at MobileCom. Existing MobileCom customers can immediately take advantage of the GPRS service by simply calling customer care and request activation, or visit MobileComs website and download the connect me software directly. We want to ensure that our customers are receiving the best possible service and care while they enjoy the benefits of GPRS. MobileCom is developing new, value added services that utilize the high-speed capabilities of GPRS and will be launching these over the coming months.
