Dubai - The second Global Good Governance Awards (3G Awards) ceremony was held on April 24 at Fairmont The Palm Hotel, Dubai. A large number of organisations from around the world participated in the ceremony where individuals and institutions from around 15 countries were honoured for their leadership roles in good governance and social responsibility.  The 3G Awards are managed and organised by the UK-based Cambridge IF Analytica, a think tank specialising in intelligence in social, political and corporate sectors.

The Awards were based on a Global Poll in which 533,452 votes were casted for over 60 nominees drawn from government & politics, corporate world and social sector & philanthropy.  Some awards were decided by 3G Critics' Choice Committee for the categories that were not deemed suitable for voting.  In total, 29 Awards were presented to individuals and institutions in the chosen three sectors.

The top award of the evening, namely 3G Philanthropy Award 2017, was presented to Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah. She was chosen to receive this award for her philanthropic works and patronage of a number of projects of immense importance in social sector and philanthropy. 

The second most prestigious award, namely 3G Leadership Award for Social Sector and Philanthropy 2017, was won by Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre from Lahore, Pakistan.  The winner was chosen for their excellent record of service offering and treatment of cancer and research in this vital area of social significance. 

The third prestigious award - 3G Lifetime Achievement Award 2017, was presented to Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the public sector for more than 37 years. He has been one of the key drivers of transformation for the public sector of Malaysia. The 3G Civil Service Award 2017, was conferred to an Indonesian activist, Teten Masduki, who is now serving as Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President of Indonesia.

A new category was introduced this year to honour an individual or an institution for their role in promoting peace and social harmony. The winner for the inaugural 3G Peace Award 2017 was Javed Afridi, a Pakistani entrepreneur and social sector activist who has played an immensely important role in promoting peace in the tribal areas located between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This accolade was a recognition of his efforts to use sports to promote positivity amongst the under-priviledged youths.

Reforms of different kinds were a major focus in this year's 3G.  The government of Malaysia's socio-economic transformation agenda for the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), implemented through the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), was recognised as the Best Economic Transformation Programme 2017. PEMANDU Associates, another Malaysian entity was chosen to receive the 3G Best Public Sector Reforms Programme Award 2017, for successfully implementing government of Malaysia's National Transformation Programme.

Winners also included four banks. The 3G CSR Award 2017 was presented to Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB). HSBC Middle East Bank was chosen to receive 3G Best CSR Campaign Award 2017. Doha Bank was honoured with 3G Environmental Responsibility Award 2017. Agrobank received 3G Financial Services Award 2017 for the second year in a row for its strong contribution in financial inclusion and the initiatives undertaken to broaden access to finance. Dr. Zubir Harun, Chairman of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia, was honoured with 3G Special Award for Advocacy of Financial Inclusion 2017.

ENEL, H&M, Scandic Hotels, Save the Children, and Addison & Khan Solicitors were among the prominent Western winners. From the Middle East, winners included Bateel, Friends of Cancer Patients and SalamAir. Fast Cables from the manufacturing sector won the 3G Product Excellence Awards 2017.

Over 400 participants witnessed the presentation of awards.  "We were overwhelmed by the large number of people attending the ceremony," said Dr. Sofiza Azmi, CEO of Cambridge IF Analytica. Inclusion of a number of organisations from the Middle East points to the improving record of good governance in the region.  "This year's awards ceremony was definitely a celebration of good governance in Malaysia and the Middle East", said Professor Humayon Dar, Chairman and Founder of Global Good Governance Awards.
