03 March 2004

March is Marco Polo month on the National Geographic channel, as photographer Michael Yamashita retraces the footsteps of this legendary explorer who continues to inspire generations of travellers and adventurers in the three part series ‘Marco Polo: The China mystery revealed.’   Beginning March 7, Michael’s fascinating journey unveils the strange lands chronicled in Marco Polo’s book, The Description of the World.’   In this visual document on one of the greatest overland journeys ever made, he investigates the incredible stories of the ‘cloth that does not burn’ that gave the Silk Route its name, moving on to Inner Mongolia and the fabled palace of the great ruler Kublai Khan in Xanadu.

Still on the Eastern theme, a female martial artist seeks to understand the mix of power, speed and endurance that makes the art unique as she penetrates the fierce, male-dominated world of these warriors every Friday in ‘Martial Arts’. It’s a discovery of devastating skills, acrobatic fighting styles and training in Aikido, the martial art for peace.

The National Geographic special in March includes an exploration of the camel family in ‘Camel’s Empire’ on March 31, retracing a history that is forty five million years old, beginning in North America and moving from the Australian outback to the camel laboratory in Dubai.

Also ongoing throughout March are National Geographic’s ever popular ‘Croc Chronicles with Dr Brady Barr (Mondays), ‘Adventure Challenge’ (Tuesdays) and ‘Storm Stories’ (Thursdays).
