MUSCAT The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) will offer a management short-course in Six Sigma from 25 to 27 September. The three-day seminar will be held at the GUtech airport campus and in cooperation with GUtech's German parent-university, RWTH Aachen University. The language of instruction will be English.

"Six Sigma is a structured approach for the continuous and effective improvement of products and processes as well as for their design. Six Sigma management tools can be applied in all departments and in different industry sectors: in manufacturing, planning, development as well as in the administration," said Engineer Sean Humphrey of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University. Humphrey will conduct the course together with Eng. Henrik Glöckner of WZL at RWTH Aachen University.

Six Sigma is based on a profound understanding of the processes as well as statistical analyses of quantitative measurements. The short-course is a basic course for professionals, executives and project leaders who want to become acquainted with the basic theories of the Six Sigma methodology and learn the systematic approach of the practical implementation of Six Sigma projects.

During the seminar different strategies based on a profound understanding of a company's processes, as well as statistical analyses of quantitative measurements will be applied. As its core element the Six Sigma approach guides towards a problem solving process - from clarifying of the problem to monitoring the effectiveness of the solution. Each stage of the cycle contains a variety of tools that may be applied. The participants of the seminar will use Six Sigma methods in groups and thus deepen and apply their knowledge. This practical application enables participants to apply the acquired skills immediately and in a beneficial way within their companies.

Both trainers are Six Sigma Black Belt trainers and experienced in common quality management methods, such as 5S, Design of Experiments (DoE), Failure-Mode- and Effect-Analysis (FMEA) and value stream mapping. They have been working as consultants in several industry sectors, mainly machine tools, aerospace industries and automotive industry.

At the end of each course participants will receive a "Six Sigma Yellow Belt" Certificate of attendance from the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University. The number of participants is limited.
