Digital leader gains advantage in super-fast 3GPP LTE technology

Dubai, UAE, August 13, 2007: Global and regional digital leader LG Electronics, a worldwide technology leader in mobile communications, announced that it has become the first Korean company to join the LTE/SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI*), an association promoting the early adoption of the Third Generation Partnership Project Long Term Evolution technology, or 3GPP LTE**.

3GPP LTE, one of the most advanced mobile communication technologies to date, is currently undergoing 4G technology standardisation by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

This is the most likely technology to become the 4G standard, as many of the world's major operators and telecommunications companies are members of LSTI. These companies include Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Ericsson, Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia, Siemens and NTT DoCoMo.

"LG's membership in LSTI will allow us to consolidate our technology leadership beyond 3G and strengthen partnerships with leading operators and telecommunications companies," said Mr. K. W. Kim, President of LG electronics - Middle East and Africa. "LG will also play a prominent role in the association to accelerate the adoption of 3GPP LTE technology."

The technology would allow LG's handsets to download at 100Mbps and upload data at 50Mbps while users are on the move. LG already demonstrated its 3GPP LTE technology in cooperation with Nortel at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain in February 2007.

About LSTI
LSTI (LTE/SAE Trial Initiative) is an association of leading operators and telecommunications companies aiming at an early commercialization of the Third Generation Partnership Project Long Term Evolution (3GPP LTE), a promising next generation mobile technology. Members include LG, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Ericsson, Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, NTT DoCoMo and others.

About 3GPP LTE
Third Generation Partnership Project Long Term Evolution or 3GPP LTE is part of the IMT-Advanced concept, for future mobile technology standards. It is in the final stages of standardization, which will be completed in September 2007. Its core technology is based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation/Multiplexing (OFDM) and Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO), which are superior for transmitting broadband data over CDMA networks and for maximizing spectral efficiency.
