Dubai, 22 July 2006
The ideal of an Omani style of garden design, appropriate to the new national style of architecture, will be the topic of a lecture to be hosted by Dubai Municipality's Historic Building Section this week at Dar Al Nadwa in Al Bastakiya Heritage District.
The lecture, to be given by British architect and interior designer, Dr. John Alexander Smith, will be held on Wednesday 26th July 2006, from 7.30 p.m.
According to Dr. Smith, who is currently Professor and Chairman of Department of Interior Design at the American University in Dubai, the lecture will stimulate further research into a neglected subject.
The narrative refers to impressions of Muscat by early European visitors, considers the design of the courtyard house in the context of the Islamic requirement for privacy, and outlines the Omani approach to facilitating a reliable water supply, prior to examining four rural gardens each of which represents a stage in the degenerative process afflicting this most ephemeral of art forms.
The subjects to be addressed in the lecture include the idea of an Islamic Garden; a brief historical appraisal of the Sultanate of Oman, its geography, climate and people; the sunken garden and the terraced garden; agriculture and gardening; and architecture and gardens.
The lecture forms part of a year-round public awareness programme, drawn up by the Historic Buildings Section. The programme includes a series of heritage and historic lectures and photo exhibitions on historic buildings to educate the people about the significance of preservation of these buildings. The section also organizes field visits for students, tourists and residents to the heritage districts like Al Bastakiya, Shindagha and Al Ras where a large number of historic buildings have been successfully restored to their former glory by Dubai Municipality.
