During a regular inspection visit, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) confiscated illegal quantities of Badh, known as Longtail silverbiddy (Gerres longirostris).
EAD confiscated 90 Kg of fish from the Al Ain Fish Market and 55 kg of Badh from the Al Mirfa Fish Market. The measure is in line with Ministerial Decree No. 186/2006 pertaining to the Prohibition and Marketing of Badh fish during the period from April 1st May 31st, 2007, which coincides with the fishs spawning season.
According to an official from EADs Marine Environment Research Centre, the decision to ban fishing of Badh aims at conserving the species and is in line with EAD's policies to conserve fish stocks and enhance their sustainability. The official added that all parties concerned, including the Abu Dhabi Fishermen Cooperative Society which supervises the Emirates fish markets, were previously informed of the ban. The Ministerial Decree was also published and advertised in the local newspapers.
According to the EADs fishery statistical records, 86.5 tonnes of Badh were landed in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during 2006. Badh feeds on marine worms and small crustaceans. Studies of this species in Abu Dhabi have revealed that it has a short life span of only 7.4 years with reproduction occurring between April and August.
As part of its mission, EAD monitors the status of the Emirates key fisheries resources. The Agency produces fisheries statistics on landings, fishing activity and economic data for the fisheries of Abu Dhabi. These statistics provide the scientific information required to manage the fisheries in a sustainable way.
