Reduced engine emissions and upgraded interiors & exteriors make the headlines for the new 2011 Land Rover LR2, whilst the LR4 is enhanced by improvements to the Terrain ResponseTM system in the form of Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control.
The LR2's i6 engine has been re-calibrated to achieve significantly reduced tailpipe emissions of NOx, HC and CO and exterior design changes including a new front bumper and grille, three new colours, and new alloy wheels, give the 2011 LR2 a fresher look.
Inside, a new range of seat styles are complimented by the redesigned instruments, setting the 2011 LR2 aside from previous models. Another small but significant change is to the Land Rover logo, which changes colour for 2011 from gold on green to a more contemporary bright silver on green.
3.2-litre i6 petrol engine
The 3.2-litre straight six continues to head the LR2 powertrain line-up for 2011. The engine has been re-calibrated but the power remains unchanged at 233PS and 317Nm (234lb ft) torque.
With an advanced, aluminium block, head and bedplate the i6 remains at the cutting edge of petrol engine design. The i6 is equipped with twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder with cam profile switching (CPS) and variable valve timing (VVT). The combination of the two mix high power with low end flexibility and maximum efficiency.
The i6 engine was originally developed with Land Rover applications in mind and is designed to resist dust, mud and water intrusion as well as operation at acute tilt angles.
LR2 - design enhancements both inside and out
The exterior of the LR2 gets a new look for 2011 with a new front bumper assembly incorporating new front fog lamp bezels. There's a new front grille in two finishes, Dark Finish for the 150PS TD4 and Bright Finish for the 190PS diesel and petrol. The Halogen projector headlamps are new, as are the rear tail lamps which now have a clear inner lens and a black lens surround for greater definition. The tailgate handle is now finished in body colour and the full width signature strip is finished in Noble. The choice of colours has changed for 2011 too, with the addition of Kosrae Green, Baltic Blue and Fuji White.
In the cabin, there are four new contemporary seat styles offering a greater range of choice. A stylish cloth trim, covered with new Tofino or Resolve fabrics, Napoli leather, a combination of Napoli leather and Alcantara, and Windsor leather for the premium pack. These four new styles differentiate between trim levels. There's a choice of manual, 6/4-way electric adjustment and 8/6-way electric adjustment for the Premium Pack seats.
New colourways compliment the revised upholstery design with Ebony, Tan and Ivory and there are matching door casings in Ebony PVC with Ivory stitching and Ebony PVC with Tan contrast stitching. Four new fascia finishers come in either Element Silver, Element Black, Dark Chestnut and Piano Black lacquered finish. This lacquered black theme is also carried over onto the steering wheel switchpack.
At the high end of the option range, there's a new Premium Pack option with Windsor Leather upholstery in Ebony, Almond, Ivory or Tan colourways. The Pack includes the luxurious 8/6 way electric seat plus premium carpet mats and covered centre stowage. All 2011 LR2s will benefit from a clear and contemporary new instrument pack too.
Terrain Response offers unparalleled driving dynamics
Terrain Response delivers the most sophisticated four wheel-drive technology in the sector ensuring the LR2 is equipped for every surface it may encounter, from sand to tarmac. Four settings remain for 2011 catering for general driving, slippery conditions such as grass, gravel, or snow, mud and ruts and sand.
As with all Land Rovers, the LR2 is rigorously tested worldwide in the UK, USA, Middle East, Australia and Russia in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +50C° and up to 95 percent humidity. The Freelander is also tested at altitudes of up to 4,000m.
Outstanding V8 engine powers the LR4 range for 2011
The astonishing 5.0 LR-V8 naturally aspirated engine, brand new in 2011 and designed specifically with Land Rover vehicles in mind, remains in the LR4 line-up unchanged for the 2011 model year. The 5.0 LR-V8 produces 375PS and 510Nm torque with low CO2 emissions of 328g/km.
A number of clever design features include the industry-first, torque-actuated variable camshaft timing on all four cams. Cam profile switching (CPS) selects either a profile suitable for low speed running or another which gives increased lift for high performance. This provides the LR4 with exceptional low-end torque to negotiate demanding terrain and allows it to become fleet of foot when conditions allow.
Superb 6-speed automatic transmission
The LR-V8 engine drives through the ultra-refined ZF HP28 6-speed automatic transmission. Its characteristics have been optimised by Land Rover engineers to provide the same class-leading response, with rapid and refined shifts.
Advanced chassis, suspension and brakes
The LR4 suspension system was substantially revised in 2011 with changes to roll centres, anti roll bars, suspension knuckles, damper bushes and the addition of a variable ratio steering rack for greater stability during high speed cruising and increased sensitivity at acute steering angles.
For 2011, there are two additional functions, Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. Hill Start Assist retains the initial driver-generated brake pressure long enough for the foot to move from brake pedal to throttle without the car rolling backwards. The brake is released after a sufficient time has elapsed or when the engine is supplying enough torque to move the car up the hill. Hill Start Assist is always available, not selectable, and neither is its operation indicated to the driver.
Gradient Acceleration Control is designed to provide safety cover on severe gradients when the driver does not have Hill Descent Control engaged. By pressurising the brake system, Gradient Acceleration Control slows the car to a limit of 5km/h for up to 20 seconds, allowing the driver to regain proper control.
Styling enhancements and new identities for LR4
The LR4 gets three exciting new paint colours for 2011, Fuji White, Baltic Blue and Siberian Silver. One small, but important feature is the Land Rover oval badge which has been given a colour change from gold on green to silver on green creating a more contemporary look. The badge appears on the grille, tailgate, steering wheel and wheel centre caps. The LR4 interior combines smooth, flowing surfaces and the minimum number of controls for an uncluttered environment.
e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES boost economy and lower CO2 emissions
The new LR4 is packed with features aimed at reducing fuel consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.
Engines have been optimised for low-end torque as well as economy, making it possible to activate the lock-up clutch of the ZF HP28 automatic transmission at lower speed. This reduces 'slip' in the hydraulic torque converter improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher torque at lower rpm also enables longer gearing for more economical cruising.
The LR4 incorporates several other energy saving features too. At standstill, the idle speed of the LR-V8 is 700rpm, using the minimum of fuel without compromising refinement. An Intelligent Power Management System includes Smart Regenerative Charging, so whenever possible the alternator charges the battery when it is most economical to do so, such as when the car is coasting rather than accelerating.
Aerodynamic features at the front end such as the lower chin spoiler and front wheel deflectors help to reduce drag by increasing underfloor airflow. The air conditioning pump is driven through a clutch which disengages when the air conditioning is not in use, reducing parasitic losses and delivering improvements in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The LR2 and LR4 are by far and away the most complete off and on road vehicles in the world, and are available in showrooms across the Middle East and North Africa now.
