Two more tracks to be completed within a month
Dubai, 21 May 2005
Dubai Municipality has recently completed a Dhs1.9 million extension of the jogging track around Al Mamzar Lagoon by 2.2 kilometres. This makes it the second largest jogging track of the emirate at nearly 4 kilometres after the 4.2 km long jogging track around Zabeel Park, which was undertaken at a cost of Dhs14 million.
This was stated by Eng. Essa Al Maidour, Assistant Director General for General Projects Affairs at Dubai Municipality, who noted that Dubai now boasts of a total of four jogging tracks while works of two new tracks are expected to be completed within a month's time.
Al Maidour said the Al Mamzar jogging track is aimed at providing an exclusive facility for jogging enthusiasts in the city while encouraging others to take up this habit as a means to keep fit.
"With additional length and free access, the rubberised, synthetic track will accommodate a larger number of joggers. What differentiates this 4-meter wide track from others in the city is that joggers can enjoy a serene environment beside the blue lagoon," he said.
The first phase of the project, he noted, involved a 1.7 meter long track. During the second phase, street lighting was provided along the entire track length so that joggers can use it during the night. A 60-cm wide sidewalk was also provided using interlock. Twenty wooden seats were also set up along the track. There is a yellow marking at every 50 meters.
It has to be noted that the first jogging track was set up around Al Safa Park in 2002. The jogging track around Al Safa Park is 3.5 kilometres long and it has been built using synthetic rubber so that joggers can smoothly perform their exercise. It has a special marking at every 100 meters. Zabeel Park, which was opened in December 2005, consists of a 4.2 km jogging track around Parks A & B. There is a 750-meter long jogging track around Satwa Neighbourhood Park which was opened in March 2006.
Works of two jogging tracks will be completed in the space of one month around Ned Al Sheba and Al Qouz parks.
Dubai Municipality has also plans to build jogging tracks in all residential parks that are coming up in various parts of the city. These projects include 29 public parks and 45 neighbourhood parks.
