In starting the structural works for the construction of bridges
Kuwait, 29 December 2011 - The supervising authority in charge of the Jahra Road Development project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Kuwait, today announced the latest updates in the structural works of the project by casting the first concrete pier (bridge column) of the model (PJ) with a height of eight meters located by the intersection of Jahra road and Al-Ghazali bridge on Tuesday the 20th of December 2011. The updates also included the progress in production piling and the latest constructions in the Pre-Cast Yard in Doha area.
The Project Director, Engineer Jeff McCammon - from the joint venture of Louis Berger group/ and Pan Arab Consulting Engineers - stated that on the 20th of December 2011, the first bridge concrete pier under the name (PJ-120) has been erected with a height of eight meters close to the intersection of Jahra road and Al-Ghazali road bridge. The pier is of model (PJ) - one of the Jahra Road project's pier models - and it is the first of a series of piers to be erected in this phase of the project which is phase 5.
Elaborating further, Engineer Jeff said:" In preparation for building the elevated roads of the project, we completed the construction and technical curing of the first part of the pier which is the column that rests on a pile cap base underground. A pile cap is a rectangular block of concrete into which the heads of the piles are embedded where the Piles are long, slender concrete columns, founded to resist the weight of the bridge. We have managed to complete 1300 production piles from a total of 5000.
Eng. McCammon also spoke of the recent updates of works at the Jahra Road Development Pre-Cast yard located in Doha area saying that the achievements there so far included the progress in the setting up the concrete batching plant, the railing fixations for the gantry crane foundations and the laying of asphalt for car parks and access roads.
"After the construction of the pre-stressed steel factory, the erection of overhead cranes inside is being executed in addition to the final assembling of offices and laboratories for the staff that has been transferred to the facility" McCammon added.
In a word on the project's social accountability, Engineer Alfred Lotfy - the Environmental and Safety consultant - affirmed: "All Environmental analysis and studies for noise and air pollution have been carried out for all phases of the project prior to launch in addition to approved periodic report submissions for all new environmental occurrences and accordingly we try to maintain ecological welfare and greenery as much as possible and avoid any damage the works may cause."
"We would like to extend our apologies for all Jahra Road users and area residents for any inconvenience however we assert that all safety measures are firmly implemented in all work sites comprising safety barricades and traffic guide signs. We urge motorists to abide by all traffic guidelines and use caution while driving within construction areas for their own safety" added Lotfy.

About The Jahra Road Development Project:
The project is located in the western region of Kuwait, which extends from the Jahra Gate (Jahra Gate Roundabout - Sheraton) to the United Nations Roundabout. It is also one of the main projects in the Ministry of Public Works' strategic plan to develop roads and motorways in the State of Kuwait in order to address the future demand of traffic, minimize traffic congestions and improve road safety.
