MobiNil's Environmental Record Internationally Recognized
Thursday, May 05, 2005
The Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (MobiNil) received recognition for its long history of environmental excellence, and was officially awarded a new ISO 14001 certificate by German Group TUV BAYERN for 3 new years.
This is the second time that the company received this certificate. The first ISO 14001 certificate was awarded in 2001 and then renewed for two consecutive years. MobiNil was the first company in Orange Group to receive this award, followed by Orange France and Orange Slovakia.
While the announcement of MobiNil's latest environmental achievement was made late in 2004, the new certificate was handed out on May 5, 2005 in a ceremony attended by Osman Sultan, President and CEO of MobiNil, Hossam el Garhy representing TUV BAYERN and numerous Egyptian media personalities.
The ISO 14001 certificate is awarded only to those companies that are capable of better managing the impact of their activities on the environment. MobiNil believes that it has a duty towards the environment, and was the first mobile phone operator in Egypt and the Middle East to obtain this certification in August 2001.'
As part of its dedication towards improving the environment, MobiNil has also adopted a wide range of measures, including collecting Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) from photocopying and printing machines for safe disposal, gathering shredded paper for recycling, and organizing special environmental seminars at universities and government & non-government organizations. MobiNil, the first to use recyclable paper scratch cards instead of the previous plastic ones, handles several environmental assessment programs such as regular measurement of the power radiated from the mobile base stations in addition to the exhaust gas and noise of the company generators and vehicles. MobiNil is also expanding the use of artificial tree-like antennas to cope with the surrounding environment and improve the visual impact.
MobiNil's adoption of ISO 14001 environmental management policies has not only enabled the company to operate more efficiently, but it has also led to a reduction in the usage of resources and raw materials, thus contributing to the preservation of energy and resources.
Hossam El Garhy, General Manager of TUV BAYERN Egypt, stated that the renewal of MobiNil's ISO certificate is due to a number of factors, the most important being that the company's top management is always committed to the highest levels of environmental management. "This commitment is cascaded down to all levels of employees, and is reflected all through the company's operations", El Garhy added.
Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid, former Minister of the Environment and a board member for the Egyptian Company for Mobile Services, expressed her admiration for sample items created from recycled printer parts, a process that reduces waste and preserves manpower, Egypt's most valuable resource.
In response to a question form one of the reporters, Osman Sultan replied that 'we cannot measure the economic benefits we receive from implementing environmentally-friendly policies & operations, because it is a long term commitment aimed more at social involvement for the good of the public.'
