Manama, Bahrain: The Managing Director of Bahrain Specialist Hospital, Dr. Kasim Ardati, has stated that with the support of the Apollo Group of Hospitals in India and BSH’s foresight to be in line with the leadership’s vision for the Kingdom of Bahrain amidst talk of health tourism in the region - they have successfully operated BSH Apollo Heart Center with its private catheterization lab for one year. This has ensured that the community can access world-class healthcare, particularly for cardiac-related cases, despite travel restrictions around the world in the circumstances of the present pandemic.
“Over the past 1 year, it has become increasingly obvious just how much effort has been expended in ensuring that the resilience of the country’s healthcare infrastructure stands strong even in the face of a global pandemic such as COVID-19,” Dr. Kasim said.
Dr. Kasim made the comments on the occasion of the 1 year anniversary of the BSH Apollo Heart Center’s Cardiac Catheterization laboratory, the first of its kind in the private sector.
The project, launched in a bid to support Bahrain’s endeavor to become a hub for medical tourism in the region, is a collaboration between Bahrain Specialist Hospital and Apollo Hospitals, which annually treats more than 60,000 GCC citizens in India.
He further added, “The Cath Lab was launched just as COVID-19 was beginning to become a serious global concern. We are happy to have been able to contribute towards ensuring that there is no disruption to the healthcare of the most vulnerable in our community. ”
“Now that COVID-19’s long term of effects on heart health are becoming increasingly clear, it has become all the more important to monitor, treat and manage heart conditions as rapidly as possible; the safety protocols we have established at the Cath Lab allow us to do just that, while maintaining high levels of infection control,” added Dr Abdul Azeez Asad Mohammed, Interventional Cardiologist who spearheads the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
The BSH Apollo Heart Center’s Cath Lab has so far witnessed over 150 procedures and, with the BSH Apollo Heart Center cardiologists having provided care to over 3,500 heart patients.
The Cath Lab has also achieved a number of milestones over the past year, particularly the reduction in door-to-balloon time for acute heart attack to an average of 42 minutes as compared to the world standard of 90 minutes.
As part of the anniversary celebration, Bahrain Specialist Hospital held a digital forum, Health Vision 2030, with international speakers from 5 institutions spanning 3 countries. This is the second iteration of the annual event, with this year’s topic being “Management of Acute Myocardial Infarction: STEMI and NON-STEMI”.
