Successful Completion of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Project Pilot Announced at Ankabut Users' Meeting, Al Ain

19 September, 2012, Al Ain

Huawei, a leading global information and communication technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced today at the Ankabut Users' Meeting in Al Ain the conclusion of a successful pilot phase to deploy Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) at the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) campus in Abu Dhabi. The project is designed to enhance both students' and teachers' access to educational resources, and both parties expect it to be the first step in a successful ongoing collaboration.

The initial project phase was piloted with 100 students at the Abu Dhabi Men's College and is expected to reach across all the 17 HCT campuses in its future phases of deployment. Students and faculty members connected to the VDI will have easier access to important documents and software from any computing device. VDI ensures consistent and efficient communication through an advanced learning environment, making it possible for students and faculty members to access shared recourses anytime and from anywhere.

Dr Tayeb Kamali, vice chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, said the agreement is part of HCT's  commitment to educating students for the 21st Century: "As part of our commitment to excellence in education, we are devoted to creating new ways to enhance and enrich students' learning experiences which will be achieved by equipping them, and our faculty members, with the latest technologies. With Huawei we look forward to implementing this technology even further across the entire HCT student body, so that our students will have the skills of teamwork, adaptability, global awareness, information technology, and analytical thinking so that they make important contributions to our nation."

This ICT infrastructure will significantly reduce the costs of software and hardware maintenance and downtime, as well as dramatically improving efficiency of communication and energy consumption. Features will include improved multimedia classrooms, distance learning through remote broadcast of lectures and new services such as a common central cloud platform to host a dynamic school portal. Moreover HCT will gain improved enrolment and academic research management platforms, multi-media classroom systems and a web library.

Dong Wu, vice president of Huawei Enterprise Middle East, added: "The UAE is a key market for Huawei and as such we know that the Emirati youth is an important asset in the development of the regional ICT industry as a whole. We have chosen to work with the HCT to demonstrate firsthand how the latest technologies can dramatically impact and improve the education experience. It is our hope that this will inspire students to learn more about how ICT can improve business and governments in similar ways."

Huawei has successfully deployed VDI solutions for educational institutes in China, Madagascar and Sudan, providing e-Education to all three countries and improving their educational infrastructure. Huawei is also growing rapidly in the enterprise market; specifically in the transportation, government, banking and finance, oil and gas, power and utilities sectors.
