Sharjah, UAE - UAE based ahlanwasahlan think tank llc (ahlanwasahlan.org) is probing hope on Earth through a series of environmental research webinars led and moderated by seven university students.
The students, three of whom are Emirati, and five of whom are UAE born, are leading the webinars following an intensive summer internship. The initiative is backed by an intelligent, unrelenting drive to address burning environmental concerns and the Earth’s climate emergency.
“It’s easy to give up hope when we find that our efforts are met with apathy, but if we give up hope, we give up our determination, and our existence becomes soulless,” said Safi Roshdy, founder of ahlanwasahlan.org
Roshdy founded the organization three years ago when she, an Arab youth, felt compelled to address the impact of relegating environmental concerns to the back burner.
“Environmental responsibility is often displaced and no one likes to be held accountable for their role in not facilitating change,” said Roshdy. “We’re working on holding everyone accountable, including ourselves.”
The summer internship provides a hands-on experience for university students in prompting critical thinking among themselves and others, and in advocating for positive social and environmental impact.
“Expertise is not in the number of years,” said Roshdy, “it’s in acknowledging what you know, and what you don’t.”
The topics addressed in the webinars include Environmental Lawsuits by Children, Covid-19’s Impact on the Transition to a Circular Economy, The Danger Posed to Food Security by Climate Change, and Managing Your Digital Carbon Footprint.
The organization celebrates its birthday this July. To learn more about the interns and register for the webinars please visit ahlanwasahlan.org or e-mail getintouch@ahlanwasahlan.org.
