Jeddah, November 20th 2011 - Senior Saudi Arabian officials representing mayoralty, ministries, municipalities, and other government authorities are meeting in Jeddah next month to highlight the progress of current projects and upcoming expansion plans in the Makkah Province.

His Excellency Dr Hani Bin Mohamed Bin Ahmed Abu Ras, Mayor of the city of Jeddah, will deliver the opening address on the first day of the 2nd Annual Modern Makkah Summit and Awards - and will be describing the future outlook of the Kingdom's economic hub.

Although the Holy City has recently experienced major improvements in its infrastructure, the movement of pilgrims to and from Makkah still presents a number of challenges. According to reports, more than 400 individuals perished during the recent Hajj pilgrimage.

More than 62 tunnels throughout the Makkah mountains and Holy sites have recently been constructed at the request of the Kingdom's Government, and were a major factor in the success of this year's Hajj season. It is widely believed that with additional development work, further improvements to safety and ease of transit can be achieved.

The initiative is officially endorsed and to be opened by His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Governor of the Makkah Province, and is taking place on December 10th and 11th 2011 at the Hilton Jeddah. The two days are jointly co-organised by Saudi-based Star Group Holdings and leading French business information group naseba.

Managing Director of naseba, Fabien Faure commented: "It is an honour to be working under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al-Faisal Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. naseba is proud to host the 2nd Modern Makkah Summit and Awards in line with His Royal Highness' vision of expanding, developing and transforming the Makkah Province. We look forward to welcoming and recognising industry leaders who have demonstrated an exemplary contribution to Makkah's development."

A range of industry experts are discussing the development of Jeddah and the Holy City, including how top project developers, construction companies and building material suppliers can contribute to the Province's continuing modernisation.

Dr Eng Sami Barhamain, Secretary General, Development Commission of Makkah and Professor Walid Abderrahman, Member of the Advisory Board to the Minister of Water and Electricity, are among the high profile leaders speaking at the initiative.

The Makkah New Era Awards, an exclusive ceremony taking place during the evening of the first day of the gathering, will honour and recognise key projects that have had a significant impact on the historical transformation of the Province.
