Collars & Cuffs sees growth in demand for its concierge tailoring services

Dubai, 20 May 2013 - According to recent global media reports in the aftermath of the seasonal 'international fashion weeks', a quiet revolution has been taking place among style connoisseurs, with a more discerning way of buying clothes on the increase.

Bespoke garments are rapidly becoming the most coveted piecesand savvy shoppers are increasingly spending their money on unique, made-to-measure pieces.

According to Samrat Amarnani , Managing Director ofCollars & Cuffs, one of the rising stars of Dubai's burgeoning bespoke tailoring market, these shoppers are part of what is being coined 'the new luxury'.

"Virtually everyone today has access to premium merchandise, but clients are getting more demanding and want a personal connection with their purchases," hesays. "Increasingly we are seeing that celebrities and royalty are moving away from top designer brands and haute couture for the ladies, instead adopting more budget-conscious bespoketailors, dressmakers and made-to-measure cobblers.

"This move is a further endorsement to what concierge tailors like Collars& Cuffs have been saying for years -and that is that bespoke tailoring meets the demand for a more individual  look that perfectly meets the needs of the customer in terms of fit and lifestyle - and surprisingly for many -  in terms of budget.

While Amarnani admits that it is certainly not a trend that will be accessible to all residents of the UAE, it is a movement that is set to shape the way many people dress for work and for social occasions in the future.

Headds that anyone who has been fitted for a suit will confirm that there is something special about the process of being measured, choosing the details such as succinct shoulder, elegant waistline, slim sleeve and no excess on the chest, coupled with getting fittings and the impeccable finishing.

"You gain a level of craftsmanship and quality, from a skilled worker, that is simply not possible in a ready-to-wear garment," he says. "And this service can be provided in the comfort of your home, the convenience of your office, and to meet your timeframe, however tight that might be!

According to Amarnani another big plus of bespoke tailoring is that very few people conform to the fashion industry's ideal in terms of height and body shape.

"People need durable, well-made clothes that are flattering and well cut. A bespoke suit from Collars & Cuffs can likely be obtained for the same price as one in a designer boutique in one of Dubai's many malls and they'll never see another one exactly the same anywhere.

"Good tailors and made-to-measure designers are sculptors with cloth and can offer something that delivers so much more than you'll get from even the most expensive factory-produced garment," he adds.

Dubai is fast becoming a centre of excellence for bespoke tailoring and Amarnani believes the emirate is set to challenge more established countries such as China (Hong Kong) and Thailand (Bangkok) as a destination for custom tailoring.

Against that he warns that too many tailoring shops in Dubai call themselves 'tailors' but to wear this tag requires an extensive apprenticeship.

"To reach the required standard needs a minimum of six-year apprenticeship - and with the right organisation," he said.

"Fashion is all about trends," says Amarnani, "and we hope to see more and more captains of industry and local personalities choosing a bespoke suit over a top brand.

"We know that once you go custom you never go back to off the rack," he said.
