Hays UAE hosted a discussion with participants taking part in year two of the Dubai Business Internship (DBI) programme, to address opportunities for the next stage of their careers.
The DBI, an initiative run under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, has created an opportunity for outstanding and ambitious graduates (the large majority of which are from China) to travel to the Middle East to study and do business in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In doing so, the programme helps bridge the gap between what industry wants and what education delivers, and forges strong links between Dubai and its strategically important markets across the world.
The class of 35 nationals from China, Kazakhstan, Russia and the United States, are either recent graduates or young people with up to three years' of work experience and will officially complete the internship with a graduation ceremony held in Dubai on 5th June.
"Securing a job is often a complex process, from identifying exactly the type of role and experience you wish to gain, right through to salary negotiations," says Bethan Robbins, Commercial Director of Hays UAE, who met with the interns during the programme.
"However, the interns should be reassured that they have fantastic prospects ahead of them. They were put through an incredibly rigorous recruitment process by Hays to be selected for the programme in the first place. Now, with 12 months in industry, they have a strong international grounding with relevant experience in their chosen profession and they should be selective in their job search going forward."
Dorothy Li, who began the programme after completing a MSc in Economics from London School of Economics and Political Science, has already received a job offer from a renowned bank in the UAE following her international experience gained from the programme.
"DBI has introduced us to influential public officials, industry leaders and entrepreneurs covering almost all fields. [As a result]...I was recently offered a position, which is obviously fantastic," she says.
Ru Wan, a graduate in International Political Economy and Intellectual Property Law from Peking University in China, speaks of her experience of the programme.
"DBI has provided me with valuable MBA knowledge that I definitely need in my career going forward...We get to work in some of the most prestigious companies in Dubai and gain unparalleled experience," She commented.
At least 50 per cent of the interns will pursue careers in the UAE as a result of the networks and exposure they have built during the DBI programme.
"I like Dubai and the UAE for the unlimited opportunities and possibilities. The government has the vision not just to be the city of the Middle East, but the city of the world," says Carmen Luo, an intern at Dubai's Museum of the Future and Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Centre (DTEC).
Hays wishes the interns well in their next venture and looks forward to attending their graduation ceremony at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Conference Centre.
The interns also expressed their thanks to Hays for hosting their discussion last month:
"The presentation definitely reflects Hays' position as the leading global recruitment company. The breadth and depth of topics covered, such as salary range, negotiation skills, and regional specific practice, are all very useful and practical. I also appreciate the interaction and openness during the presentation," added Carmen.
