First Ever Regional Finals Highlight Threats of Cyber Crime

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The first ever CyberLympics regional finals at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK head towards the climax of the competition tomorrow (12 OCTOBER 2011) with some of the most skilful hackers from India and the Middle East taking part in a series of ethical challenges to attack and defend a number of software targets.

Covering web applications, OS compromise, exploit hunting, and lock picking, the event involves six teams from India, Jordan and the UAE pitted against each other to highlight the sophistication and speed of ICT security.

"It gives us great pleasure to be partnering with GITEX to host the region's first CyberLympics finals," said Leonard Chin, Vice Chair of the Global CyberLympics Organizing Committee. "CyberLympics involves a tremendous amount of skill and it's a lot of fun, but it is also an excellent way to raise awareness of cybercrime. We have already seen a great attendance throughout the championship and I expect the audience will grow even more for the final day."

The championships, part of the inaugural Cyber Security @ GITEX initiative, continue today (11 OCTOBER) in Hall 1 of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, culminating in a prize giving ceremony.

Trixee Loh, Senior Vice President, Dubai World Trade Centre said: "Global cyber threats are escalating day by day, and as the number of infected personal and professional computers increases across the Middle East, the more scope there is for companies to lose vast amounts of money. The Cyber Security feature at GITEX is part of a major regional drive to alert organisations to these threats and the CyberLympics event illustrates perfectly just how skillful hackers can be."

CyberLympics is organized by the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), an organisation that certifies individuals in various e-commerce and information security skills.

Endorsed by Impact, the cyber security executing arm of the United Nations' specialised agency, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the Global CyberLympics hopes to foster stronger international co-operation on information security issues and to improve cybersecurity training and awareness across all borders.

All Cyber Security @ Gitex and Global CyberLympics Championship sessions are free to attend for all visitors and exhibitors.

GITEX 2011 is currently taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre and will run until Thursday. It is introducing brand new elements to reinforce its position as the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region's leading 'finger on the pulse' technology event.

As one of the three largest ICT exhibitions in the world, the show connects more than 130,000 industry professionals from five continents with over 3,500 suppliers, and is seen as one of the most influential and high-profile events in the global ICT sector.
