The boom in the construction industry in the UAE has led to setting up of several industrial units in the building and construction materials sector. The world-scale plasterboard factory being set up by Gypsemna Company, Abu Dhabi is one such plant. The plant, currently under construction in a 80 acre plot in the new Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD-II) at Mussafah, will have a capacity of 50 million Square meters per year of various types of plasterboard. It is one of the new projects being implemented by Mr. Jamal Al Ghurair (of Al Khaleej Sugar Company, Dubai and part of the reputed Al Ghurair family) in the building and construction materials sector. It may be added here that the Group is also setting up a 18 Million Square Meters per year Porcelain Tiles Factory in the same area under a new company of the Group - Porcellan Company, Abu Dhabi.

Expected to be commissioned by the last quarter of 2008, the Gypsemna plant will have the capacity to produce plasterboards for a wide range of dimensions and sizes i.e. 8 mm to 25 mm thick, 600 to 1350 mm wide and 1800 mm to 4500 mm in length. Besides regular boards, the plant will be capable to produce Moisture and Fire resistant boards as per the requirements of the local construction industry. Gypsemna plans to add other gypsum based products like plasters and blocks into their product range, making it a unique Gypsum based complex in the country.

Gypsemna Plasterboard plant will be the first high speed plant for plasterboard production in the region, with a line speed of 90 meters per minute. "By global standards too, it is one of the largest-capacity plants," says Dilip Kumar Borah, Technical Manager with Jamal Al Ghurair Group, who has been responsible for setting up of this mega project. "We have an edge here as we can make it locally - any type and any size. We are flexible enough to make different types of products. We are geared to meet special requirements of customers through our Marketing & Research and Development (R&D) departments. Being a UAE based manufacturer, we should be able to meet the local market requirements promptly at short notice." Borah says.

The machinery for this highly automated plant is being supplied by Grenzebach, Germany - an industry leader for equipment for the Gypsum industry.

When completed, the plant is expected to substitute large imports of plasterboard needed by the booming construction industry of the United Arab Emirates and the nearby Gulf Co-operation Council countries. "From a 100 per cent importing country, we want the UAE to become an exporting country. Depending on the market requirements, we aim to export around 50 per cent of our production." Borah says.
