Dr. Hafeez Rehman carries out more than 26,500 keyhole surgeries and 1,300 laparoscopic hysterectomies

Dubai, UAE, April 30, 2007: A renowned surgeon in the field of laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Hafeez Rehman, recently performed an unusual operation at Medcare hospital to remove a fibroid estimated to be the size of a 30-week foetus.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery, a relatively new surgical procedure in the UAE, allows doctors to remove the uterus from inside the body with laparoscopic instruments. A thin telescope-like device is attached to a video camera which is inserted through a small incision into the navel. The laparoscope lets the surgeon to perform much of the procedure through tiny incisions while carefully examining the inside of the pelvis.

Common medical reasons for performing hysterectomies include uterine fibroids, menorrhagia or abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, chronic pelvic pain and cancer of the cervix or uterus. These conditions if left untreated can lead to heavy bleeding, severe pain and problems at later stages.

"The hysterectomy surgery is commonly used for treatment of fibroids and abnormal bleeding without having to make large incisions in the abdomen and excessive loss of blood," said Dr. Hafeez Rehman, Visiting Consultant and Gynaec Laparoscopic Surgeon, Medcare Hospital.

Dr.Rehman added, "In most serious cancer cases, a hysterectomy is highly recommended as a life-saving choice. We strongly advise patients to opt for hysterectomy as they can be assured of 100 per cent clearance from cancer."

Having done more than 26,500 keyhole surgeries and 1,300 laparoscopic assisted vaginal surgeries, he is a pioneer for laparoscopic procedures such as tubal recannualiasation, pelvic lymphadenectomy, hysterectomy, radical pelvic surgeries, and pelvic floor repair surgeries.

According to Dr.Rehman, patients who undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy only require an overnight stay and general anesthesia in comparison to traditional surgical procedures. On average, they can resume work and regular activities in less than two weeks.

This innovative technique has many benefits which include reduced pain and trauma to the body, less costs and a shortened recovery time. Depending on the cases and the degree of the surgery, the price can vary between AED10,000 and AED20,000.

Presently Chairman of India's largest Gynaec - Endoscopy unit, Dr.Rehman is associated with leading medical institutions in the field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology the world over, diagnosing malformations and diseases inside the uterus and responsible for performing foetal intrauterine surgeries.

He has trained more than 1200 students in India and now brings his expertise to the UAE. He plans on holding extensive training camps for doctors and surgeons on faster and modern techniques for treating several cancer related surgeries at Medcare Hospital.

Having contributed largely to the area of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, he has devised his own methods such as Burch Colpo Suspension with tacker, Posterior Sling surgery for nulliparous prolapse, vaginal myomectomy, and pelvic floor repairs.

Set to become one of the UAE's leading acute care hospitals, Medcare has already received patients and performed minor and complex surgeries including laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) for abdominal and gynaecological conditions.
