2 June 2013: Dubai, UAE: The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Air Navigation and Aerodrome Department (ANA) held the 6th Annual ANA Safety Seminar from 28 to 29 May 2013, at the Al Marooj Rotana Hotel in Dubai.
The event which was titled "Fatigue & Human Factors Management for Air Navigation & Aerodromes" was supported by both national and international civil aviation organizations, and was seen by many delegates as another successful major event in the UAE safety promotion calendar. A major sponsor of the event was Global Aerospace Logistics, Airbus Pro Sky, Dubai Air Navigation Services and Emirates Airlines.
H.E Saif Al Suwaidi, GCAA Director General, said in his opening address: "The GCAA is committed to empowering the UAE Aviation industry to lead the way in continually making improvements to Fatigue management to meet the highest safety standards set by the international civil aviation organization."
Over 150 participants from UAE air traffic control units, airports, airlines, government agencies and the wider industry attended the two day workshop which featured speakers from the GCAA, the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO, Paris Descartes University (France), Airbus Prosky and other renowned entities.
The seminar objectives revolved around identifying and promoting an improved awareness of what is fatigue and human factors, and understanding how these affect aviation operations staff and what the resultant risks to operations are. The seminar provided an opportunity to propose actions and mitigations to implement an efficient fatigue risk management system to provide needed protection to staff and industry from the adverse effects of fatigue and human focus limitations. Delegates took advantage of the opportunity to network and brainstorm during the workshop to determine ways to foster continuous improvements to safety within the industry.
The seminar tackled fatigue-related issue starting with providing an improved understanding of what is fatigue and human factors, and how these human physical and mental limitations can affect operational performance. Guest speakers outlined the tools available to the industry to assist in the management of fatigue and human factors.
Ismaeil Al Balooshi, the GCAA Executive Director of Aviation Safety Affairs Sector, stated, "We will continue to expand this important annual event to include more of the industry not only from the UAE, but also from regional and global aviation organisations. The 6th Annual event witnessed a transformation into an International Safety Seminar, together with vital participation workshops, which reinforce our Authority's Mission to continue to be a world leader in the aviation industry."
