High-Speed ASICs, Increased Port Density Enable Multi-gigabit Performance and Network Segmentation for Richer Enterprise-Class Capabilities

MIDDLE EAST - Nov. 13, 2008 - Fortinet® - the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced the FortiGate®-620B multi-threat security appliance, which brings record-setting performance to the enterprise segment. The FortiGate-620B is the second in a family of enterprise-class products that leverages the accelerated performance and expanded network capabilities typical of Fortinet's highest-end systems. With the introduction of security-specific ASIC network processors previously reserved for high-end products, the FortiGate-620B sets new performance records with 16 Gbps firewall and 12 Gbps VPN throughput. Expandable up to 24 ports, the FortiGate-620B appliance offers the highest port density in its class, which is the key driver behind the flexibility that enterprise companies can now have for internal network security segmentation.

"The increased popularity of gigabit-switching infrastructures and growing network size are fueling the need for internal network segmentation points with gigabit-per-second links, and these requirements are extending beyond traditional high-end enterprises," said Michael Xie, CTO and co-founder, Fortinet. "The FortiGate-620B continues Fortinet's strategy to drive higher price/performance and port density into our products in order to bring high-end enterprise-level features to a broader enterprise segment."

The FortiGate-620B appliance integrates eight core security functions, including antivirus, intrusion prevention (IPS), spyware prevention, antispam, Web content filtering, traffic shaping, VPN and firewall. Customers can choose to purchase FortiGate appliances for all of these functionalities, or integrate just a few functions. In either case, it has become clear that enterprises of all sizes are asking for much more than just firewall protection for their networks, and moreover are requiring richer features like fast performance and network segmentation options.

"Changes in threats and the dynamic nature of enterprise technology are forcing firewalls to evolve. Business connections are becoming more complex, driving firewalls to have increasingly rich management and configuration solutions, as well as to provide deeper and broader inspection and blocking capabilities," said Greg Young and John Pescatore, Gartner research vice presidents, in the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls, 2H07 Sept. 13, 2007.

Key Enterprise Performance Metrics

The FortiGate-620B represents a doubling in performance and port density over Fortinet's FortiGate-310B appliance, which was introduced earlier this year and designed for the mid-range segment. The higher end FortiGate-620B builds upon the successful customer acceptance of the FortiGate-310B to offer the following features and benefits:

  • Best-in-class firewall/ VPN throughput of 16 Gbps and 12 Gbps, respectively;

  • Highest port density with twenty 10/10/1000 Ethernet interfaces and lowest price per port of any product in its class; 16 of the 20 interfaces are accelerated by FortiASIC network processors, delivering wire speed firewall throughput regardless of packet size;

  • AMC expansion slot providing four additional SFP wire-speed firewall ports or increased hard drive capacity;

  • Advances to the FortiASIC content processor, standard to all FortiGate systems, resulting in significant improvements to intrusion prevention system (IPS) and antivirus performance.

Through the higher firewall/VPN performance and port density, the FortiGate-620B offers enterprise customers the ability to segment their network for greater policy granularity and event isolation. This segmentation feature, previously only available from Fortinet's high-enterprise product lines, offers a richer set of capabilities and raises the standard for enterprise products.

As with all FortiGate systems, the FortiGate-620B consolidates critical security technology and services to enhance network protection and reduce total cost of ownership. The systems are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard® subscription services, which provide updates to help protect against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans and other threats - around the clock and around the world.

Judhi Prasetyo, Consulting Manager at Fortinet Middle East, said, "We expect to see a high demand for our new FortiGate-620B appliance in Middle East. With such high throughput capacity and port density, enterprises can plug any LAN segment, workstation and even server with Gigabit network card into the FortiGate-620B and set security policies to protect them against both internal and external threats. The result is higher security protection without sacrificing network performance."
