Dubai's first fine arts and antiques auction on Thursday and Friday featuring Islamic art, French antiques
Dubai - April 18th 2006: A collection of over 300 pieces of 18th and 19th century fine art objects, Islamic Art, European art, silverware, glassware, furniture, jewellery, textile, arms and armour, metal ware and ceramic are set to 'go under the hammer' Thursday and Friday. The highlight of the night will be a complete hand written Holy Quran from East Java from the early 20th century. The paper is hand made and the cover is of hand tooled leather, and bidding is expected to start at US$12,000 (AED43,920).
The auction is a part of 'The International Art & Antique Expo 2006 which begins on April 19th 2006 at the Joharah Ballroom at Madinat Jumeirah Conference Center in Dubai, sponsored by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and supported by the Dubai Cultural Council.
"This event will be Dubai's first high level art and antique auction with a wide variety of collectables brought in from galleries and private collections across the globe," said Paul Fletcher, Managing Partner of Lifestyle Auctions, the Dubai based company managing the auction. "We are interested to find out how many Walt Disney collectors are in Dubai to bid for the original Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck and Pluto marionettes from the 1950s. It is indeed a great opportunity to own a piece of history"
Other items of interest include a large Terracotta Pot dating back to 2300-2000 BC, excavated in the Indus Valley featuring ancient paintings of figures and animals. A fine cut crystal Turkish fountain from the early 1900s and a Minoan (a highly sophisticated culture in Crete around 1700 BC) mahogany wood carving of eagles standing nearly two meters high, with an opening price of US$40,000 (AED146,800).
Ottoman oil paintings from the 17th century, poetry books and Persian carpets will also be displayed.
