Several government organizations in the UAE hosted a presentation on geographical information systems (GIS) for their executive team from June 10-13, 2013. The presentation, conducted by Mr. Greg Duffy, an accomplished consultant, advisor and author on enterprise utilization of GIS, BI, CRM and other IT disciplines, was aimed to give insights on the role of GIS and information technology in providing smooth and efficient services in today's broad and complex business environment.
Four organizations--the Department of Transport (DoT Abu Dhabi), Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), and Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC) each hosted Mr. Duffy for one day, consecutively from June 10-13.
It is important for these organizations that their management team and stakeholders understand the significance of location and its primary tool--GIS, in improving workflows, planning, and efficiency. In a study by Oxera published earlier this year, they contend that geo-services including geographic mapping and location based services allow consumers and organizations around the world to save billions of dollars annually.
Mr. Greg Duffy broke down his presentation into three important themes to define and help management quantify the value and importance of GIS and IT. These include the business case process or a system of identifying requirements for IT or GIS projects, determining GIS maturity or how broad GIS is being utilized and its perceived value inside the organization, and measuring and scoring projects implemented or being implemented.
All of the four hosting organizations invited their executive team including directors, CEOs and their GIS and IT teams, for them to gain a holistic understanding of how GIS and IT contribute to their corporate goals. Aside from the presentation, the attendees benefited a lot from the high value and strategic level discussions during the meeting with Mr. Duffy.
Greg Duffy is the principal consultant at Woodfield Consulting (Toronto, Canada). He is an accomplished advisor, writer and speaker on programs, projects and people where infrastructure, technology and processes meet to serve the public. His new book, "Demystifying Business Cases for Information Technology, GIS and more" has just recently come out.
His visit and presentation was sponsored by GISTEC and conducted in cooperation with the Chairman's Office of DoT Abu Dhabi, ADWEA, ADCO, and ADSIC.
