Cityscape announces shortlisted entries

A record 365 entries have been received for the Cityscape Architectural Awards celebrating architectural excellence which take place next month as part of the Cityscape Dubai 2008 international real estate show.

Supported by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the American Institute of Architects and Architectural Association of the UAE, under the theme of Design for an Emerging World, the award winners will be announced on 6 October 2008, during a gala dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai.

The geographical reach of architectural projects shortlisted from the 365 entries spans the Middle East, Asia, Africa, India and Europe, including the following countries: Bahrain; Croatia; Hong Kong; India; Kenya; Malaysia; Palestine; Singapore; South Africa; South Korea; Taiwan; Thailand; Turkey; and the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, Fujairah and Abu Dhabi.

Rohan Marwaha, Managing Director of Cityscape, said: "These awards have set the global industry standard, as eagerly anticipated as they are keenly contested."

The awards are made in five categories covering commercial or mixed use; community, which includes religious and public buildings; leisure; residential; and tourism, travel and transport. A further three special awards will be given for contribution to the environment, Islamic architecture and master planning.  New at this year's awards is the Young Architect Award to encourage and reward promising local student talent.

The awards are judged by a team of eminent architects and industry figureheads, including: Dr Fatih A. Rifki, Dean of the School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Sharjah; Dr Suha Özkan, who retired in 2006 from the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and established World Architecture Community; George Katodrytis, Associate Professor of Architecture at the American University of Sharjah; Douglas L Steidl, 2005 President of the American Institute of Architects; and John Assael, Vice-President of RIBA Professional Services.
