• Ericsson demonstrates key solutions to enable smart cities' transformation at LTE Mena 2014.
• Heterogeneous networks, featuring solutions such as small cells, will improve and densify the existing mobile broadband infrastructure to provide the best consumer experience in a smart city
The Networked Society, in which all cities will be smart cities, will see high demands on mobile networks in order to handle a significantly increased number of connected devices. During LTE Mena 2014, held from May 11 to 13 in Dubai UAE, Ericsson is showcasing its latest technological innovation that fulfills the high demand on connectivity in smart cities, one of which is heterogeneous network (HetNet).
HetNet solution will meet the connectivity challenges of a smart city, by improving performance and increasing cost efficiency through the efficient use of available spectrum. It will also help to create an optimal customer experience while facilitating the truly mobile lifestyle that smart city residents aim to experience.
Building a high-performance HetNet is based on three pillars: improving the performance of existing macro base station sites; densifying the existing network by adding macro sites at strategic locations, and adding small cells based on HSPA, LTE and Wi-Fi technologies.
"The accelerating pace of innovation and the social transformation towards the Networked Society havenow fully risen on a global and regional scale. With the smart cities' vision in the horizon, we are now at a tipping point and we need to get our infrastructure ready to fullfill the consumers' high demand on connectivity. Heterogeneous networks are the ideal solution in this case, providing the required level of experience through an optimizedand a cost-efficient network." said Anders Lindblad, President of Ericsson, Region Middle East.
Tremendous data growth and the increased demand for an improved end user experience is a reality in our ever more connected society. The growth in mobile data traffic is expected to grow to be 10 times more between 2013 and 2019. As smart device adoption continues to grow and more devices are connected, operators will need to meet consumers' needs with the most efficient solutions. Today's solutions do not meet the demands of the future, as they are built primarily for voice coverage; they are also cost inefficient in covering large building and venue sizes, and offer limited scalability. A heterogeneous network, featuring solutions such as small cells, will improve and densify existing mobile broadband infrastructure to meet ever-increasing consumer demands.
