Muscat - In partnership with Nama Group, The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) recently opened an office in Dhofar as part of its ambitious expansion plans. The inauguration was held under the auspices of HE Shaikh Salim bin Aufeit bin Abdullah Al Shanfari, Head of Dhofar Municipality, and was attended by ESO board members and staff, Nama Group representatives and sustainability committee members, government representatives and senior management of major companies operating in the Governorate. The new facility was developed as part of a Memorandum of Understanding between ESO and Nama Group signed in February 2015.
Mohammed Al Mashani, ESO's Dhofar Board Member, said: "The opening of our first office in Dhofar reflects our growing commitment to the governorate. Since our inception we have developed a number of key projects and campaigns to support the environment in Dhofar, including the Frankincense Research project and native tree planting campaigns. With the launch of our new office we will be able to elevate and better coordinate our conservation and sustainability efforts in Oman's southernmost governorate."
Commenting on the inauguration, Eng. Omar Al Wahaibi, Chief Executive Officer, Nama Group, also commented: "Our support for the new ESO office fits very well with our Sustainability Policy's environmental objectives. It is our shared responsibility to preserve and protect Dhofar's natural beauty, and the new ESO office, along with the tree planting activity, will enable more projects to be implemented and encourage further participation of volunteers from the region."
As a sign of their commitment, this week ESO has planted 100 native trees saplings at public schools in Dhofar, enhancing forestation in the area with the support of Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Wealth, Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and Nama Group. With ESO possessing a large membership and support base in Dhofar, the society's new branch will focus on strengthening ties to the Dhofari community in addition to boosting environmental causes within the governorate. ESO has also expressed its gratitude and appreciation to Taj Al Amira Furniture for equipping the new office in Dhofar.
The society was founded in 2004 by Omanis representing different regions of the Sultanate and in 2009 was accepted as a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Being the first organization of its kind in Oman, the society has worked for over a decade to promote conservation and environmental issues throughout the Sultanate. With a number of landmark campaigns already under its belt, the inauguration of ESO's latest office is set to herald a new era for the society's expansion plans.
