Dubai, UAE: Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, has implemented its ETS Flow Optimization using Statistical Process control for those buildings served by them in Palm Jumeirah Crescent area in 2014. The system has achieved significant results in energy conservation. The system has achieved an improvement of 0.045 kW/TR which has resulted in more than 4 million kWH of Electrical Energy saving, and AED more than 2 million, in one year.

Empower succeeded in developing the ETS Flow Optimization using Statistical Process Control, which is widely used in the manufacturing industry to improve the quality. This comes in line with Empower's commitment to meet users’ requirements in terms of quality of service.

Each building served with district cooling is equipped with ETS (Energy Transfer Station), heat exchangers, temperature control valves, sensors and a control system. The control system is programmed in such a way that the temperature control valves maintain the required water temperature without affecting the building’s cooling requirements.  The Temperature Control valve regulates the flow so as to meet the customers’ chilled water demands while maintaining the optimum temperature of the return water to the district cooling plant. Standard deviation is used as a measure for the performance of the valve. The parameters governing the valve control are fine-tuned to achieve a desired Standard deviation which in turn improves the overall performance of the district cooling Plant.

“District cooling is still growing in similar energy sectors in the Middle East. We need to have better systems to measure compliance with quality standards to achieve the best results. We strive to reach the highest levels of customer satisfaction, by taking better measures to help us meet our commitments in terms of operational and service standards, through the ETS Flow Optimization using Statistical Process. This supports the implementation of our strategy, in line with Dubai’s Integrated Energy Strategy, which aims to secure sustainable energy supply, enhance demand efficiency, and contribute to environmental protection through energy and resource conservation, for generations to come,” said Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower.

Empower was globally recognised for its efforts when it received IDEA Innovation Awards Honorable mention for the 'Energy Transfer Solution Flow Control Optimisation Using Statistical Process Control'. ,this was part of the 109th International District Energy Association (IDEA) Annual Conference and Tradeshow 2018, held in Vancouver, Canada, from 11 to 14 June.

Empower currently operates over 1.34 Million RT, providing environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments, such as Jumeirah Group, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Business Bay, Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Design District and International Media Production Zone, among others.
