Abu Dhabi, November 8, 2006: Emirates Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Abu Dhabi, chaired a discussion panel on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC 2006) today. Executives from leading international oil and gas companies including BP and Shell, besides experts from NGOs also participated in the session.
The discussions covered a broad range of CSR issues for the oil and gas sector, including the promotion of safe work environments, preventing or minimizing environmental damage, the maintenance of ethical standards in international operations and maintaining open and honest communications with all stakeholders.
Omar Saif Ghobash, Deputy CEO of Emirates Foundation and moderator of the CSR panel, said that the Foundation seeks to encourage public and private sector institutions to adopt CSR principles. He said that the Foundation encourages cooperative partnerships in which corporate CSR goals can be paired with the Foundation's four core interests of education, development and research, arts and culture, and social and environmental development.
"There is a connection between Emirates Foundation and corporate CSR initiatives and programs that will definitely help the Foundation to reach its goals; especially in the areas of social and environmental development," he said. Ghobash noted that Emirates Foundation is a UAE government institution that aims at enhancing cooperation between private and public institutions in the interests of the UAE population.
Other participation on the panel included panelists Gavin Graham of Shell Oil, Graham Baxter of BP, Laila Al Hassan of the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Shawqi Sajwani from the Environmental Friends Society.
