Leading Middle East solution provider Elcome International LLC was recently invited to speak at the Digital Ship Dubai conference about future trends in navigation products and regulations.
Elcome presented the audience with a summary of upcoming IMO regulations, including the IMO e-navigation strategy, ECDIS and the use of digital ENC charts for commercial shipping.
"The IMO E-navigation strategy will benefit ship owners and ship operators by enhancing safety and security of navigation. It facilitates ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship communication of vital navigation information and presents it on the ships bridge in a uniform standardized format. This will enhance on-board decision making, maximize navigational safety benefits and minimize the risk of confusion or misinterpretation" explained Rudi C. Joustra, Elcome General Manager. "At the heart of e-navigation will be the Integrated Navigation System, including ECDIS using official ENCs.
The INS will feature a standardized Man-Machine-Interface and the combined result will be increased situational awareness and a reduced bridge workload, contributing to a reduction in vessel navigation errors and accidents. In addition the number of on-board stand-alone systems will be reduced and navigators on-board will be joined with VTS-operators on-shore through a satellite broad band connection.
E-navigation is expected to be phased in from 2012 onwards and it is important for ship owners to select navigation systems which are likely to be compatible with new future e-navigation standards. Elcome promotes INS systems from reputed manufacturers such as Sperry Marine, which have been designed with e-navigation in mind. Elcome is the regional distributor of UKHO digital ENC charts, a product will play a fundamental role in e-navigation."
