Doha - Eight gifted Iraqi students are amongst the 2007/2008 intake to Qatar Foundation's Academic Bridge Program (ABP).
The students will join other top caliber young people for the one year program commencing in September. The curriculum includes English, mathematics, science and IT. Pupils are also instructed in university study skills and take part in co-curricular activities which contribute to their personal development.
The Academic Bridge Program is advantageously located amongst the five top US universities which have campuses at Education City and provides young people with a smooth transfer from a school environment to university life. Embarking on a program which bridges school and university also helps them adjust to cultural challenges in the university system.
All the students hope to further their education at one of Education City's top ranking universities.
Students were greeted in Doha airport by a welcoming committee which included Dr. Shetha Faraj Al Numan, Academic Bridge Program Student Services Coordinator; Amer Homsi a student from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar; and Maya Abusharar a student from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Arts in Qatar. Amer and Maya attended as Education City Orientation Leaders on behalf of Qatar Foundation.
Dr. Miles Lovelace the Director of the Academic Bridge Program said: "The group of Iraqi students enrolled in the Academic Bridge Program includes top high -school graduates. On the ABP they will acquire academic study skills that will help them immerse into a higher education environment such as problem solving, critical thinking, and motivation.
The Iraqi Ministry for Higher Education is sponsoring the students, and will continue to sponsor them in the event of their admittance to the universities of Education City.
