Around 50 of Dubai Women's College (DWC) students visited recently the manufacturing facilities of National Fire Fighting Manufacturing FZCO (NAFFCO) at the Jebel Ali Free Zone.
The group of Year 2 business students attended a presentation on cost and management accounting at NAFFCO. This was followed by a visit to the factory where the students went through the various sections of the manufacturing process and participated in a fire extinguisher drill.
The field trip allowed students learn about the operations and cost elements of a manufacturing enterprise and relate them to the various management accounting processes such as budgeting and cost-volume-profit analysis. "Having seen how one of the biggest manufacturing companies use what we are learning in our business courses is a great learning experience, it made our learning easier and more interesting. Furthermore, we were proud to know that one of the top 5 companies in its industry is based in Dubai," said Noora Al Hashmi, a Business student.,
Sarah Mohamed, another Business student, added, "As a student, I found the field trip to NAFFCO very educational. It was an eye opening experience that informed me of a local production company. I would like to see more manufacturing firms in the local market for I believe they help in the development of the economy"
Eng. Emad Kassab, General Manager of NAFFCO stated "Being one of the largest manufacturing enterprises in the region we strongly believe and encourage in giving professional training and conducting workshops on various topics like today on operations and cost elements to our young generation and society in order to equip them to handle any kind of situation, we take immense pride in disseminating the vital information to the society as a part of our corporate social responsibility".
He noted that NAFFCO is among the world's top five manufacturers of fire fighting equipment, fire protection systems and safety engineering and was awarded the prestigious Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award 2010 for manufacturing excellence, under the free zones category.
"We are always motivated by our motto "Think Safety, Think NAFFCO", and we continuously strive in providing comprehensive and reliable fire protection solutions to make the world a safer place to live in" commented Eng. Khalid Al Khatib, Group CEO, NAFFCO. "Being our primary responsibility, we continuously focus on research & development to strive in to adopt and set innovative best manufacturing practices in the industry, in order to be recognised worldwide as the No.1 company in the fire protection systems and safety engineering," he pointed out.
Dr. Sitalakshmi Ramanan, Business Faculty at DWC said, "DWC is constantly looking to provide opportunities for students to interact with local industries in UAE. This is a positive step in that direction as the students were able to experience first-hand the processes and thereby the cost elements involved in a manufacturing business and learn about the budgeting process in these firms."
