Dubai Municipality has expanded the subscriber database of the Dubai Virtual Reference System (DVRS), which was launched by the civic body in 2002. The DVRS comprises of a control room with central server at the Dubai Municipality headquarters and five continuous operating reference stations at Qusais, Sheikh Zayed Road, Merqab, Lusayili, and Hatta to provide effective solutions for engineers in the field of surveying and construction as well as all users of the Global Positioning System or GPS in the emirate of Dubai.
"The DVRS has been achieving continuous success through out the years since its inception as a large number of companies and government establishments have been benefiting from it through the engineers in our Survey Section," said Eng. Yousuf Al Marzouqi, Head of Geodetic and Hydrographic Survey Unit in the Planning and Survey Department.
"The satellite-aided system has replaced the old system based on a control point network. It also reduced the use of manual control points up to 90% annually, resulting in an increased percentage of accomplishment in daily transactions by our employees with excellence, speed and precision," he said.
Al Marzouqi said there has been an increased demand for availing the service from different companies and establishments. "In response to these demands, we have increased the capacity of Router (the system to verify the authenticity of the person who accesses the DVRS control room using GPS) from 30 users to 120 users. This will expand the opportunities for benefiting from the services of the current system in the Emirate of Dubai. In addition to that, we have changed the central servers with more advanced ones that will facilitate benefiting from the data of the system, which are stored in the processor of the GPS observations inside and outside the Emirate of Dubai," he said.
It is possible to obtain data from this system by registering and subscribing the service and get DVRS data, in addition to offering remarks and suggestions through the Municipality website, www.dm.gov.ae.
This system can be utilized for accomplishing different engineering tasks that include demarcation of plots, service lines of telephones, electricity and water, detail survey, Ariel mapping and hydrographic survey, in addition to launching control points for survey.
Al Marzouqi said there is a comprehensive homogeneous action team that manages the system throughout the week on a constant basis in order to ensure continuance of work and solving problems and emergencies.
The DVRS provides effective solution for various GPS users like construction engineers, contractors, consultants, ports, civil defence and transport authorities. It has also applications in the fields of geological, mineral and oil explorations. The specific applications of the system range from navigation and fleet management; providing control of geodetic, topographical, cadastral, photo control and engineering survey including setting outs, detail survey...etc; mapping and geographical information systems; hydrographic activities; and geodynamics, geodesy, monitoring crustal movements (earthquake hazards) and seismic activities.
Several engineering firms, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Etisalat, Police, Armed Forces, academic institutions, research centres and ports seek surveying data from DVRS. It is useful for conducting scientific studies by educational institutions and research and study centres, particularly in the field of monitoring natural phenomena such as earthquakes and seismic activities.
