Held in association with Habib Al Mulla & Co, the workshop provided a good understanding of the commercial agency concept

Dubai, UAE: Focusing on the needs of professionals dealing with legal contracts, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in association with Habib Al Mulla & Company, organised an intensive one-day commercial agency contracts workshop at the Chamber premises on Wednesday.

The workshop was attended by Dubai Chamber members, lawyers, legal consultants, investors, contract administrators, commercial agents and representatives of small and medium sized enterprises. It was conducted by Douglas Smith, Partner, Eliane Nassour, Senior Counsel, Rony Eid, Counsel and Mark Gillian, Associate, of the Corporate and Commercial team at  Habib Al Mulla & Company's Dubai office.

The presentations focused on the development of UAE Agency Law and provided in-depth training on the practical application of the law as well as the technical drafting and negotiation of agreements and the special requirements for setting up branches and representative offices of foreign companies.

The workshop also focused on the general legal framework of a franchise agreement, how franchise rights are granted and how to choose the right dispute resolution forum. It also highlighted some important case studies relating to non-registered agency agreements, compensation and the jurisdiction of the UAE courts.

Jehad Kazim, Director, Legal Services Department, Dubai Chamber, stated that the workshop was organised as part of Dubai Chamber's strategic objective to support the development of business by identifying the best business practices to enhance stakeholders' performance and competitiveness.

Kazim said: "Commercial agency is a very important element in international trade as foreign suppliers use the services of an agent in their target market. Therefore, it is essential for organisations and businesses to have a good understanding of the commercial agency concept and its legal framework because this defines their relationship and also creates special protection rights for both parties."

Kazim added: "The training workshop provided a fast, effective and clear way to obtain the skills and the confidence to understand, negotiate and draft franchise agreements."

Kazim also pointed out that Dubai Chamber regularly organises training, seminars and workshops to serve the business community, boost trade and contribute to the economic growth of Dubai.

Douglas Smith, partner at Habib Al Mulla & Company added that the firm is pleased to team up with Dubai Chamber to offer legal training to the business community. "As a UAE firm, it's important for us to further people's understanding of UAE laws and how they work in practice. Hopefully the attendees will be able to utilise these skills to help further their businesses," he said.
