United Arab Emirates, Dubai, April 25, 2013: The Medical Education Department (MED) at Dubai Health Authority, recently hosted the 2nd Palliative Care Symposium at Rashid Medical Library Auditorium. The theme of the event was "Shifting the paradigm: From cure to quality care".
The aim of this event was to build on the 1st Symposium's success in education, awareness and sharing of the latest updates in the field by experts from the UAE as well as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Tareq AlAyed, paediatric intensivist from King Fahad Health Sciences Center in Riyadh was the first keynote speaker for the day. Dr. AlAyed shared his experience with the audience and presented his paper on "Do Not Resuscitate Orders in a Saudi Paediatric Intensive Care". The second keynote was addressed by Dr. Said Abuhasna, Chairman, Department of Critical Care Medicine Tawam Hospital and Clinical Professor, faculty of medicine, UAE University in Al Ain. Dr. Abuhasna, shared his study about care of terminally ill patients and explored the latest update on End of Life Care in the UAE.
The symposium went on with a paper on "Dealing with a terminal illness": An evidence based discussion on the role of healthcare professionals and the needs of patients and families.
Iffat Elbarazi medical research specialist from Al Ain university presented the paper which highlighted the role of multidisciplinary team approach to deal with end of life issues. Several other topics from Sheikh Khalifa Medical Center, AlAin University, Dubai hospital, Tawam hospital and Rashid hospital were presented by speakers to elaborate on different aspects of palliative care.
The scientific sessions were comprehensive and interactive with expert speakers from varied settings who provided their input on the latest trends in End-of-Life Care.
The event was concluded by viewing a documentary movie on paediatric palliative/hospice care.
Over 400 healthcare providers from all over the UAE attended the event.
