Dubai Financial Market overall performance decreased by 9.6% to reach 1630.5  points the end of this year compared to 1803.6 points at the end of 2009. The market capitalization decreased in 2010 by 6.6% to reach AED 199.1 billion compared to AED 213.2 billion at the end of last year.

The value of shares traded during this year reached AED 69.7  billion, compared to AED 173.5  billion recorded during 2009, a decrease by 59.8%. Number of shares traded decreased by 65.3% to reach 38.4 billion shares during this year compared to 110.7 billion shares were traded during the previous year. Number of transactions executed during 2010 decreased by 60% to reach 794.7 thousand  compared to 1.984 million deals carried out during the last year.

In terms of sectoral contribution to trading volumes, the real estate and construction sector ranked first in terms of the value of traded shares, to reach AED 46.9 billion, or 67.3% of the total value of shares traded in the market. Investment and financial services ranked second at AED 10.5 billion, or 15.1%, followed by the transportation sector to AED 4.19 billion, or 6%, and the banking sector amounted to AED 4.17 billion, or  5.99%. The Communications sector handled AED 2.5 billion, or 3.6%, and Insurance sector amounted  755.9 million, or 1.1%. Utilities sector handled AED  665.5 million, or  1%, and the consumer staples and material sectors ranked last to reach AED 5.2 million and AED 3.1 million respectively.

The value of shares bought by foreign investors during this year reached AED 30.8 billion comprising 44.2 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. The value of stocks sold by foreign investors during the same period reached AED 30.6 billion comprising 44 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. Net foreign investment on the market reached AED 180.3 million during the same period, as aggregate buy.

The value of stocks bought by institutional investors during this year reached AED 16 billion comprising 23 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. The value of stocks sold by institutional investors during the same period reached AED 15.2 billion which constitutes 21.8 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. Net institutional investment on the market reached AED 864.7 million during the period, as aggregate buy.
