Manama/Bahrain, June 25, 2006: Deutsche Post World Net recently published its first sustainability report, titled "Facing the challenges of global logistics". For the first time, the Group's commitment to the environment, employees and social issues has been detailed in a single comprehensive report. For many years, Deutsche Post World Net has been assuming its global responsibility by undertaking numerous initiatives. The 70-page report explores these initiatives, providing detailed accounts of the many efforts and their results.
The Group's sustainability policies are reflected in its commitment to its employees. "As a global corporation with about 500,000 employees in more than 220 countries and territories, we are one of the biggest employers in the world. As a result of this position, we have a particular responsibility toward our employees," said Walter Scheurle, Board Member for Personnel at Deutsche Post World Net. "Sustainability is the foundation that supports the diversity of our employees. It is the central component of the Group's seven corporate values which are the ethical basis for the actions of all company employees." Deutsche Post World Net is formulating numerous programs that are designed to create a working environment in which all employees can develop their wide variety of talents and potential. Health management, personnel development and cooperation with worker representatives are further elements of the company's responsible dealings with employees.
"Environmental protection and social commitment are important focal points of our global corporate strategy, which is based on sustainable development. In this sustainability report, we bring transparence to our activities and, as a result, create the framework for an open dialogue with society," said Dr. Monika Wulf-Mathies, Managing Director of Public Policy and Sustainability at Deutsche Post World Net.
"As the world's leading provider of logistics services, we consider both the efficient and the careful use of resources to be one part of our responsible approach to the environment," Dr. Wulf-Mathies said. The overarching goal is to cut the amount of CO2 emissions generated by transportation. To achieve this goal, the Group is investing in a modern fleet of planes and vehicles as well as in alternative propulsion systems like natural gas. In addition, Deutsche Post World Net offers environmentally friendly services and products, including the "Green Package." With this product, all CO2 emissions related to the transportation of the package are counter-balanced through global environmental projects.
The company also plays an active part in charitable projects conducted around the world. One special focus is disaster management. As a reflection of this commitment, Deutsche Post World Net has commenced a strategic partnership with the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). One important part of this agreement covers the inauguration of disaster response teams. The mission of the teams is to ensure the logistical flow of relief supplies at airports in regions suddenly hit by natural catastrophes. In the Asia-Pacific and Americas regions, the first DHL Disaster Response Teams were set up in April and May of this year.
The sustainability report combines the previous personnel and social awareness report with the environmental report, and adds information about social issues. It is being published in German and English. The online version is available at www.dpwn.com/SustainabilityReport.
