Doubles 10/40GbE Densities, Unifies Physicaland Virtual Infrastructure .
Dell Networking S6000doubles 10/40GbE densities and throughput while lowering energy consumption byup to 50 percent, enabling denser, more efficient physical infrastructure.
Advanced software featuresfor supporting network virtualization and software-defined networks to bridgethe boundaries of physical and virtual environments, includes support for theVMware NSX controller for VMware vCenter deployments.
Integrated virtualizationand automation features designed to scale and simplify virtual infrastructurethrough the Dell Open Automation framework across all Dell Networking products.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 05 September, 2013
Dell Networking today expanded its S-series portfoliowith the new S6000, the industry's highest-density 1RU 10/40GbE switchingplatform for highly-virtualized data centres. A fixed form factor design, theS6000 doubles the density and throughput while consuming up to 50 percent lesspower than previous generation top-of-rack switches. Built-in advancedvirtualization and automation features help customers scale larger virtualdeployments in a smaller physical footprint, and helps solve the challenge ofbridging virtualized and non-virtualized aspects of the infrastructure.
Accelerating Data CentreTransformation
Today's data centres are going through substantive and rapid change:
Growth in servervirtualization and cloud deployments are driving denser deployments withsignificantly increased bandwidth requirements.
The predominance of East-Westtraffic inside data centres generated by newer workloads such as Hadoop, virtual desktop infrastructure, web and cloud applications is causing manycustomers to consider new network architectures to maximise efficiency andeconomics.
Industry Leading Density, Throughputand Energy Efficiency
High-density: Deployed as32 40GbE ports or 96 10GbE ports plus 8 40GbE ports in 1RU, the S6000 cansupport new, more flexible network architectures for high-density compute racksin top-of-rack position, or provide network connectivity for multiple racks inefficient end-of-row or middle-of-row configurations.
High-throughput: Providesup to 2.56Tbps performance, twice that of similar competitive products in astandard 1RU form factor allowing customers to aggressively invest in 10GbE forin-rack server and storage connectivity
Energy efficient: S6000 isFresh Air capable and validated as part of Dell's Fresh Air cooling solutionfor servers, storage and networking. By leveraging the thermal and reliabilityadvantages engineered into this portfolio of equipment, customers are able torun data centres even warmer, helping reduce additional maintenance andinfrastructure costs, while enabling lower overall energy consumption.
Built-In Network Virtualization,Software-Defined Networking, Automation Features
S6000 supports advancednetwork virtualization and software-defined networking features includinghardware-accelerated layer 2 gateway functionality for use with VMware NSX™,bridging traffic between virtualized and non-virtualized environments.
Dell is also previewingenhanced functionality with Active Fabric Manager (AFM) 2.0 specifically forVMware environments. Active Fabric Manager provides simplified configuration, management and monitoring of Dell Active Fabric leaf and spine elements. WithAFM 2.0, Dell will be introducing command line interface functionality forVMware vSphere® Distributed Switch allowing customers to now configure bothphysical and virtual fabric switches with common design templates andindustry-standard command line syntax.
Like the rest of the DellNetworking S-series portfolio, S6000 supports OpenFlow for controller-basedapplications; Bare Metal Provisioning (BMP) for rapid and automateddeployments; Virtual Server Networking (VSN) for automated VM mobility and VLANconfiguration; and Perl and Python scripting for maximum programmability andinterworkings with development operations (DevOps). All of this makes the S6000highly adaptable and flexible and built to simplify operations.
Supporting Quotes
"Virtual environments areexpanding while physical footprints remain constant, resulting in massivedensity increases in servers and storage. Networks need to keep up. That's whatinspired the S6000," said to Shabbir Ahmad - Regional SalesDirector, Networking, EMEA Emerging Markets."The S6000 platform can help customers unify virtualized andnon-virtualized IT elements, providing a gateway to a software-definedenterprise."
"The S6000 delivers a re-imagining of the data centre backbone," saidJoel Jaeggli, Zynga network engineer and Dell S6000 beta tester. "The 40Gb/s data centre core transition beginsin earnest with the arrival of high-density fixed-configuration switches."
"To help accelerate theadoption of Network Virtualization technologies, it will be imperative fororganizations to have visibility across both the virtualized and physicalnetwork environment," said Bob Laliberte, senior analyst, Enterprise StrategyGroup. "The Dell S6000 is tightly integrated with VMware solutions to enable aholistic view of the network environment that will enable fastertroubleshooting and more effective provisioning."
Availability
Dell expects worldwide availability of the S6000 switching platform inits fiscal third quarter 2013.
