Gulf Marketing Review (GMR) in association with Mediahub Dubai hosted the Dubai Bus Design Awards, an official event of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) that aimed to push the creative boundaries of bus advertising and design. During the function held at Lotus One, Deira City Centre won the top prize for best design.
"DSS has always believed in and supported all creative endeavours in the emirate. The Dubai Bus Design Awards 2005 was one such successful platform for sponsors' to highlight brand values that tie up with the 10 theme-specific weeks of DSS. It has been very rewarding to witness the enthusiastic participation of DSS sponsors and government departments in this unique creative challenge," said Laila Suhail, DSS Executive Project Director.
Deira City Centre's 'Take Me to the City' design prepared by TBWA RAAD, depicting school children clinging to the outside of the bus was the clear winner. Fortune Promoseven's adaptation of MasterCard's current 'Together Wherever' campaign, won the second prize. Fido Dido drove away with the third place award of commendation for Impact BBDO's 7UP design.
The runner up award went to Dubai Duty Free and Fortune Promoseven for their flower surprise design. The competition, open exclusively to DSS sponsors, saw 15 DSS sponsors and a number of government departments challenging their agencies to come up with designs that best link their brands with one of the 10 themes of this year's DSS.
"Our aim was to create an even playing field for the region's top brands and design agencies to compete on a creative level," said Fahad bin Sulaiman, CEO of Mediahub, the exclusive agency for Emirates Transport Buses and winner of the Best Marketing & Promotions Company 2005 by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders. "Each sponsor and agency was given the same brief, the same bus, the same timeframe - making it a competition based on pure creativity."
GMR was responsible for the judging, which was hosted at the Dubai World Trade Centre in early July. Five judges evaluated each design as a 'traffic stopping' procession of colorful buses snaked its way through the main driveway.
Barry Gray, Managing Director of GMR said, "The judges were looking for designs that best linked the brand to the DSS themes as well as designs that used the medium in a creative way. There were some designs that really stood out from the competition."
