In collaboration with the UAE Society of Engineers and Computers & Structures Inc. (CSI) of Berkeley , California , the Civil Engineering Department conducted a one-day workshop "Computer Aided Analysis and Design of Structures using SAP2000 and ETABS" on October 11 at the society's headquarters in Sharjah.

More than 120 engineers representing over 80 companies and government agencies from all seven emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia attended. In his keynote address, Dr. Jamal Abdalla , Chair of the Civil Engineering Department, noted that "continuous training is essential to keep engineers informed of new and emerging technologies and paradigms." He also stressed the importance of using of computers in solving engineering problems.

Workshop attendees got an overview of SAP2000, a general purpose static and dynamic finite element software, and ETABS , a building analysis and design software, used in modeling, analyzing and designing structures. These programs are used worldwide by engineers involved in the design of buildings, bridges, dams and other landmark structures.

The workshop developed from the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the AUS and the Society of Engineers.
