Corporate Health and Safety Solutions (CHSS) are proud to announce the first Omani national to qualify as a graduate member of the Institute of Occupational Health & Safety (MIOSH).  Having studied the entire eleven month course, while working, the Omani Health and Safety Executive has graduated!

Ali Al Mahrooqi, an Omani national, studied the entire diploma with the invaluable assistance of Corporate Health and Safety Solutions (CHSS) Gulf, the leading provider of health and safety training in the region.

A former Instrument Engineer in Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Ali previously worked his way through the standard HSE qualification - an International General Certificate with CHSS, which provides a sound basic understanding of HSE. Next, he embarked on the degree equivalent NEBOSH Diploma, while still working full time for PDO.  Eleven months later, Ali is now a CHSS graduate of MIOSH and, after completing two years of professional development in the field, will become a chartered member.

Ali stresses the commitment necessary to achieve such a globally recognised, superior qualification.  "I originally made the move into HSE for moral reasons - preventing injuries and deaths gives me a sense of personal satisfaction - and I felt that to work effectively and better my chance of career progression, it was important to further my qualifications in this field.  However, the course is extremely intense and challenging.  The pass rate of the course  is about 60%, so I am proud to have achieved such a remarkable first for an Omani."

Ali found 'Law' the most challenging area of the diploma as the legal language is complex and based on a system he had never encountered before.  He is pleased to learn that CHSS will be conducting the first ever NEBOSH International Diploma in Muscat in early 2007.  The NEBOSH International Diploma is based on International Labour Organisation regulations rather than UK Law.

When asked what it would take for someone to become a MIOSH graduate, he replies, "The studying alone is very demanding and for anyone thinking of taking the course, you have to be 100% committed to the subject and have a genuine interest in HSE.  I was lucky to have such an understanding and the support of my family and of course my trainers at CHSS especially Mr. Simon Jones. For this I thank them wholeheartedly."

CHSS Gulf is being called upon by more and more companies and individuals as the awareness and understanding of the importance of HSE heightens. This has been spurred by the Omani government's implementation of tighter HSE regulations, but according to CHSS there is still room for improvement.

Margaret Jukes, Managing Director of CHSS Gulf said, "We hope Ali has set a precedent for all other Omani's interested in furthering their HSE qualifications.  He is a real success story for us, having become a fully fledged graduate member of MIOSH in just eleven months.  Although much of his study was done at home, he was fully supported and mentored by CHSS at all times, and we were always on hand to help at any stage during the studying process."

CHSS Gulf offers internationally accredited training courses including NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) and IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health).  In 2005 over 23,000 delegates attended CHSS training courses either on an open course basis or in-house and successfully gained globally recognised qualifications. The first International Nebosh Diploma will begin in Muscat in January 2007. The course is based on best practice and contains no UK law which makes it more appropriate for the Gulf region.
