Khartoum, Sudan - Applications close soon for two new scholarships for young women at Ahfad University for Women in Khartoum.
The successful applicants will be able to study completely free, thanks to a new CAPO scholarship programme announced in May by the Blue Nile Dairy Company to mark its 10th anniversary.
Applications close on Thursday 16th August and, with Sudan School Certificate results released at the end of June, Blue Nile Dairy Company General Manager Akhtar Zahid says the company is expecting keen competition for the two scholarships.
The CAPO scholarships will cover all living as well as study costs and are aimed at assisting students from poor areas who could otherwise not attend university.
The successful applicants can choose their own course of study, but they will be expected to use the skills and knowledge gained in their home community for the same number of years that they need to complete their degree.
Mr Zahid said the scholarship programme is a key part of the company's ongoing commitment to the Sudanese community.
"Education is the key to many things. By making these scholarships available we will be changing the lives of two worthy young women, we will be reaching out into their communities as well."
The scholarships have been welcomed by Ahfad President, Gasim Y. Badri, who said the university relies heavily on community and corporate support and the Blue Nile Diary Company was showing real community leadership in establishing the CAPO Scholarship programme.
"We look forward to welcoming the successful CAPO Scholarship winners on campus and helping them achieve their academic goals," he said.
Ahfad University for Women was established in 1995 and offers qualifications from six schools of study: Family Sciences, Psychology and Preschool Education, Organisational Management, Rural Extension, Education and Development, Medicine and Pharmacy.
The CAPO Scholarship programme is one of a range of special 10th anniversary events and promotions involving both staff and the community.
To mark the occasion, all 500-plus employees were invited to a big family picnic while a gala dinner for management and invited guests following.
Mr Zahid says the company's success is due to the commitment and dedication of its hard working team. "We are proud of all that we have accomplished over the past decade, but none of it would have been possible without the support of every staff member."
