Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: "The words 'business model' are commonly used in management today, but do we really understand what it means?". Mr. Carlos Guevara, Partner of ShiftIN Partners, threw the question at the participants of the 6th edition of the course "Business Model Generation" conducted in Riyadh between the 10th and the 12th of June 2014.

The core of the training was the 9 essential building blocks of the business model canvas, as described in the best seller of the same name, by Alex Osterwalder. During the 3-day workshop the business models of Nespresso, Google and Nintendo were cracked in group discussions.

Cracking the disruptive case of Uber:

It was during the third day of the course that the group decided to apply the acquired learnings form the course to analyze a real-life situation. In Europe, taxi associations were protesting against the popular application Uber which connects riders to drivers through their apps, opening up more possibilities for riders and more business for drivers, competing with traditional Taxi services. So the participants decided to use the Business Model Canvas to analyze the business model of Uber and compare it against that of the traditional taxis.

It became a surprise for all the participants, how 'Business Model Generation' has brought all of them to a common point. Participants who came from a variety of public and private sector organisations like Modon, King Saud Medical City and Saudi Investment Bank, said they were "extremely satisfied with the use of real case studies and active exercises" and that "the comprehensive use of concepts, methodologies and content was just on target to drive results".
