BIsB Sponsors 8th Shurooq Camp for Diabetic Children at Hawar Islands

As part of its significant contributions to the local community, Bahrain Islamic Bank (BIsB), the first Islamic bank in the Kingdom of Bahrain, has recently provided financial support to the Bahrain Diabetics Association to enable the group to hold an educational camp for more than 40 children and 60 companions and specialists designed to educate diabetic children to depend upon themselves and to learn how to live with the disease.

In a statement, Mr. Khalid Alkhayat, BIsB Manager Corporate Communications said: "Under directives from Mr. Yousif Saleh Khalaf, Chief Executive Officer of the Bank for the importance of providing support and assistance to all the effort aimed at promoting children's health and welfare in the Kingdom, we have provided support to this educational children's camp."

"During 2006 the Bank made considerable efforts and provided support and welfare services to Bahraini children.  Such efforts included the opening of the BIsB Centre for Game Therapy and sponsorship of several workshops highlighting the seriousness of family violence upon children."

"The Bank also provided support to several medical and scientific studies related to children's health and safety.  Financial support was also provided for treatment of a number of children suffering from different diseases, hence our sponsorship of this camp is a move in the same direction." He added.

It should be noted that the 8th Shurooq Diabetic Children's Camp, which was concluded on two days ago at Hawar Islands, included various activities aimed at informing children about the symptoms of hypoglycemia and high blood sugar level through a number of activities that were supervised by medical specialists, dieticians  and nurses.

Children also had the opportunity to meet with others suffering from the same disease which gave them more self-confidence and reassured their parents about learning the skills enabling the young ones to protect themselves.

The event is also designed to educate children suffering from diabetes on how to depend upon themselves, how to take their insulin shot and how to maintain the proper blood sugar to avoid any complications.

Deputy Chairman of Bahrain Diabetics Association Dr. Mariam Al Mulla Hermes Al Hajri expressed her appreciation of the significant role played by Bahrain Islamic Bank in sponsoring events designed to serve the community interest as demonstrated by sponsoring this camp.

Commenting about the camp, Dr. Al Hajri said:  "The total number of children who took part in the Shurooq Camp since its launch in 1997 until this year has reached 300 children.  Participating in this year's event were 60 physicians, nurses and volunteers and around 40 children who attended the camp at Hawar Island and concluded two days ago (Sunday).  The children were aged between 8 and 15 years and represented all the school levels in the Kingdom."

"The Association invited for participation the biggest number of diabetic children who did not take part in previous camps.  Also invited were children with diabetes from other GCC countries, as there were 8 children and companions this year from Qatar and Oman." She added.

Dr. Al Hajri concluded: "For myself and on behalf of the Association's Board of Directors, I would like to express my appreciation of all the sincere effort made by BIsB officials led by Mr. Yousif Saleh Khalaf, BIsB CEO and I am hopeful of the continuation of this fruitful co-operation and support for the well-being and health of children with diabetes."

Bahrain Islamic Bank provided during 2006 various forms of sponsorships designed to offer assistance and support for various social events, with special focus on children.  It opened a special children play therapy Centre and sponsored a wide range of workshops aimed at enhancing awareness of child abuse and other humanitarian and social activities of concern to the community.

During the last five years it contributed more than one million Bahrain Dinars in the form of donations, Zakat, sponsorships and contributions to the community.
