Cardiovascular diseases account for 60% of causes of death from prevailing health conditions in older adults in Lebanon

World Health Organization reports show that cardiovascular diseases remain today the world's largest killers, claiming 17.1 million lives a year

Beirut: With a determined vision in mind to fight one of the most widespread diseases in Lebanon & the world, Bellevue Medical Center (BMC) has announced the opening of its new Cath Lab with the presence of Dr. Antoine Ghoussaib representing the Head of Syndicate of Doctors Dr. Sharaf Abou Sharaf, BMC's Medical Director Dr. Ghassan Maalouf, Chief of BMC's cardiology department Dr. Ghassan Kiwan in addition to a number of doctors, managers from different hospitals and media partners.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Kiwan said, "The Cath lab represents a golden imperative to checking a patient's heart." He continues to say, "What truly distinguishes BMC is its extraordinary medical foundation since it does not depend mainly on using the latest equipment and unique medical technology, but has recruited an expert team of physicians and planned its layout with an exceptional engineering brilliance that allows for any type of cardiology tests to take place within less than five minutes from the patient's arrival to the hospital."

In accordance to the World Health Organization's latest reports, cardiovascular diseases remain the world's largest killers, claiming 17.1 million lives a year. As for Lebanon, cardiovascular diseases account for over 16% of prevalent health conditions and are the underlying causes to 60% of deaths in older adults.

From his side, Dr. Maalouf said, "Investing every moment in a patient's life is crucial to saving his or her life, and this has led us to building the lab through a unique platform that is exceptionally equipped to make any heart procedure take place immediately amidst the adjacently located emergency room, cardiology and radiology departments and cardiac care unit. This layout has been proven beneficial with the least amount of danger and allows for an effective medical procedure and the shortest timeframe to saving our patient's life."

The launch of BMC's Cath lab comes only two years after the hospital's opening and six months following the launch of the 'Bellevue International Training Center' aimed at advancing a culture of awareness, prevention and action while sharing best practices and technical knowledge to reduce death and disability from heart disease and stroke by means of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.  This center was launched after a signing ceremony with the American Heart Association (AHA) who took care of training the whole team.

The continuous increase in stress levels, unhealthy lifestyles and pollution, in addition to smoking, are all factors that contribute to the fact that cardiovascular diseases will continue to increase in the coming years. The availability of better cardiac care that medical institutions such as BMC is providing, will help in dealing with this definite matter for a safer and healthier Lebanon.
