Abu Dhabi, 15th March 2011: Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi has come up with a very creative idea for Earth Hour 2011.
The management team has fitted ten spinning bikes from Beach Rotana's gymnasium with dynamos that will produce enough electricity to power 10 lamps to light the way for guests visiting the hotel lobby during Earth Hour.
For one hour, all Beach Rotana senior managers (20 in total) as well as the General Manager, Moritz Klein, and the Executive Assistant Manager, Dominique Hebert, will take turns cycling on these bikes to promote awareness amongst guests, colleagues and visitors and light up the lobby whilst the other lights are off.
The hotel will also turn off all its exterior lights on Saturday 26th March from 8:30pm till 9:30pm as well as the lights in all its 10 restaurants.
Linen and towels will not be changed for one day on the 26th March in order to save on water and chemicals, unless otherwise requested by the guest.
Small tent cards in the rooms will also encourage guests to switch off their lights and other electronic equipment during that one hour.
Moritz Klein, General Manager, comments: 'This year, we wanted to do more than just turn off the lights during Earth Hour, so we have decided to get our management team involved physically to generate more awareness on the impact of energy consumption on the planet. With the cycling initiative in particular, we will encourage more people to participate, grow the buzz around this special hour and add some fun for the team at the same time.'
Earth Hour is an international event organised by the WWF (Worlwide Fund For Nature) and held on the last Saturday of March each year. Households and businesses are asked to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Earth hour was conceived by WWF Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008.-Ends-
