Dr. Peter Saling presents BASF Eco-efficiency Analysis tool for industry

The Green Building Summit within the scope of the Arabian Construction Week, sponsored by BASF, will be held on March 28 and 29 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, UAE. The summit will host renowned experts on sustainable buildings, who will discuss in detail the practices, materials and initiatives that can be implemented or utilised on construction sites.

A highlight will be the presentation by BASF's Dr. Peter Saling regarding BASF's Eco-efficiency Analysis.
Harald Kroll, Managing Director of BASF in the Middle East says: "Our philosophy at BASF is that sustainable solutions should not only be 'greener' and more eco-friendly, they must also demonstrate higher performance. BASF's Eco-Efficiency Analysis tool assists organisations to quickly and cost effectively quantify the sustainability of products and processes and is based on the approach used by BASF itself. Our goal in presenting this tool to industry is to encourage sustainable development, and provide impetus to achieve measurable positive change."

The Eco-efficiency Analysis tool developed by BASF combines ecological and economic assessments, taking into consideration environmental behaviour, environmental impact, possible impacts on human health and ecosystems, and on the costs of products and processes from cradle to grave.

Notes Kroll: "Sustainability is the driving force behind BASF's activities in the construction sector and our focus at the exhibition will be on the presentation of three key products from our various divisions - our Elastocoast polyurethane coastal protection system, our innovative Paliogen Black, Lumogen Black and Sicopal Black pigments for solar heat management, and our Neopor insulation materials. Each of these products are particularly relevant to this geography and research and testing - as well as a strong track record - confirms the benefits they provide."

Elastocoast from BASF Polyurethanes
Revetment with Elastocoast is a new and innovative coastal protection system. Elastocoast is a bonding system that reinforces hydraulic gravel at the contact surface permanently by means of a bi-component plastic polyurethane (PU).

The use of Elastocoast in coastal protection systems has been proven to be effective by the joint research project by BASF Polyurethanes GmbH and the TU Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) and its endurance under environmental influence has been demonstrated. Additional results and dimensioning procedures (GOLFKLAP) undertaken by TU Delft and the engineering office ARCADIS (NL) have also proved that Elastocoast meets international standards.

Solar heat management with innovative pigments
BASF's innovative pigments Paliogen® Black, Lumogen® Black and Sicopal® Black; unlike carbon black (the standard black pigment), reflect most of the invisible near infrared (NIR) radiation which accounts for more than 50 percent of the total incident solar energy. The reflection of NIR by the use of BASF pigment-coated surface contributes to lower temperatures in the coating and lower temperature strain in coating layers and for the substrate. This extends the lifetime of the coated material. It also helps to lower indoor temperatures, minimising the need for cooling and lowering CO2 outputs.

40 percent energy saving with Neopor insulation
Another innovation of BASF, Neopor, is an innovative insulation material for walls, roofs and floors. By virtue of inbuilt infrared absorbers, Neopor has a better insulation performance than conventional insulation materials. Calculations carried out by the Passivhaus Institute Darmstadt, Germany, show that in hot climatic zones insulation panels made of Neopor significantly reduce overheating and the hours of active cooling. Depending on the type and design of a house, at least 40 percent of the cooling energy can be saved in this way and thus CO2 emissions can be lowered.
